Opelousas man held in Tuesday bank heist
Baton Rouge police arrested a 29-year-old man Tuesday accused of robbing a bank on Florida Street, a police spokesman said.
Karl Shelvin walked into the State Bank and Trust on 665 Florida St. at 2:22 p.m. with a note demanding money, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.
Shelvin grabbed the money and ran away from the bank, but police caught him shortly afterward, McKneely said.
Shelvin, 520 Willow St., Opelousas, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count of simple robbery.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of a three-story house fire Tuesday on South Harrell’s Ferry Road, the East Side Fire Department said.
Firefighters were dispatched to 18155 S. Harrell’s Ferry Road at 1:32 p.m. and found the home engulfed in flames, East Side Assistant Chief Keith Smith said.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 2:22 p.m., Smith said.
No one was injured, and no one was home at the time of the fire, Smith said.
The house is considered a total loss, Smith said.
Authorities book one on suspicion of DWI
Authorities arrested at least one person suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked her into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.
Hannah Curtis, 19, 9918 Azrok Ave., Baton Rouge, was booked on one count each of first-offense DWI, driving over the median, failure to signal/improper turn, reckless operation of a vehicle, speeding and disobeying a red light.
