A man driving the wrong way Friday in an eastbound lane of the Interstate 10 bridge caused a four-vehicle crash that killed two people, Baton Rouge police said.

Alex Dillman, 29, 11110 Bayou Fordouche Road, Morganza, slammed his Jeep Cherokee head on into a tractor-trailer at 2:20 a.m., police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

Dillman continued into the center lane and hit a Dodge pickup, driven by Dargus Rochon, 33, 5102 Old Jeanerette Road, New Iberia, McKneely said.

Dillman died at the scene and Dargus died at a hospital, McKneely said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and the driver of a Lincoln Navigator involved in the crash was not hurt.

Investigators are trying to determine why Dillman was driving in the wrong way on the interstate when the crash occurred, causing the eastbound lanes over the bridge to close for more than six hours.

Hmm... 2:20AM and that location? Someone was drunk driving down Highland Road and mistook the I-10E off-ramp at Highland/Terrace for an I-10W on-ramp? It's conjecture, but you have to admit it's plausible.
