FEMA offers free disaster consultations

Property owners rebuilding after Hurricane Isaac can receive a free consultation with hazard mitigation advisers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency at home improvement centers in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes starting Monday.

The advisers can offer tips and techniques on how to protect homes from future disaster-related damage as well as provide information on roof repair, home elevation, flood insurance, mold cleanup and rebuilding flooded homes, according to a FEMA news release.

Most of the information and free publications provided are geared for do-it-yourself work and general contractors. The mitigation stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. The sites are Lowe’s, 12484 Airline Highway, Gonzales; The Home Depot, 18139 Highland Road, Baton Rouge; The Home Depot, 143 Northshore Blvd., Slidell; and Lowe’s, 3007 U.S. 190 W., Hammond.
