Two coaches suspended over yelling incident

Two coaches heard yelling at a group of 7- and 8-year-old football players at BREC’s Olympia Field have been suspended for one game and will be placed on probation for the remainder of this season and all of next season, according to a statement from BREC Communications Director Cheryl Michelet.

After the season, the coaches will have to go through a recertification process, which all coaches who participate in Louisiana Youth Football — the nonprofit that partners with BREC to offer the football leagues — have to do anyway, Michelet said.

The names of the coaches were not released.

Louisiana Youth Football has more than 2,600 children and 365 coaches participating in its Baton Rouge-area program, which uses BREC facilities in offering tackle football programs to children from 4 years old to 12 years old, said Leroy Hollins, the organization’s director.

The investigation was prompted by a 54-second video in which the coaches can be heard screaming at players and threatening to have them run extra in practice if they don’t do what the coaches say.

The video was taken by a passer-by who said he didn’t want to be identified because he works for a government agency and feared possible repercussions.

These guys should never be permitted to be around young children. The measures described in the article are not going to work.
