Pointe Coupee Police Jury rolls millages forward
NEW ROADS — The Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury is set to receive an additional $100,000 in revenue for the 2012 tax year after deciding Tuesday night to roll forward the parish’s millage rate.
Chief Deputy Assessor Delilah McDowell told the jury there were slight increases in property values around False River and some of the subdivisions in New Roads.
According to a spreadsheet from the Assessor’s Office, the Police Jury will collect about $1.1 million during 2012-13 based on the parish’s adjusted 3.42 millage rate in 2012.
The roll forward decision also will increase revenue for the parish library by about $115,000 during the year and the five fire districts in Pointe Coupee by as much as $80,000 for the year, the spreadsheet shows.
Every four years, assessors are required by law to reassess property values. As a result, taxing bodies are required to “roll back” their tax rates to levels that will generate the same revenue as the previous year.
When property values increase, government entities can vote to keep millages the same, or “roll them forward,” creating additional revenue.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Juror Allen Monk informed the jury the Pointe Coupee Parish Chamber of Commerce will be asking for an increase in the parish’s subsidy to the economic development organization as part of the jury’s 2013 fiscal year budget.
Monk said the parish already allocates $10,000 annually to the chamber.
“At some point we will have to think about economic development because we can’t live on what we have,” Monk said. “I know this is a bad time, but I’d like to see it increase.”
Monk said he intends to present the jury with a formal request from the chamber in November.
