Doctor accused of health care fraud
LAFAYETTE — The U.S. Attorney’s Office charged a local chiropractor with three counts of health care fraud after more than $176,000 in services and care were billed for but not always performed, according to a bill of information filed Wednesday.
Michael John Johnsey, who is listed in the Secretary of State’s corporation’s database as a registered agent and officer of Acadiana Doctors of Chiropractic in Lafayette, is accused of defrauding Blue Cross Blue Shield from Jan. 1, 2008, through July 31, 2011.
The Secretary of State’s database shows that the company filed an affidavit to dissolve June 2, 2011.
The bill of information states that Johnsey and Acadiana Doctors of Chiropractic received $176,234 in fraudulently obtained funds from the health insurance company by submitting false health insurance claim forms.
The three counts stem from services billed for three different patients. Count one includes 291 bills sent under patient “P.L.” for a total of $9,863.
Count two outlines 353 bills for $7,796 under patient P.R.’s health insurance.
Count three outlines 154 bills for a total of $6,028 under patient W.W.
The bill of information states that, upon conviction, Johnsey shall forfeit the $176,234 from the company for “fraudulent billing for services not rendered.”
While the company is listed in the phone book at 318 Guilbeau Road, a call to the business did not go through Thursday.
