Lafayette to host music, arts events
LAFAYETTE — Cité des Arts plans to host musical and cultural events beginning Friday with an 8 p.m. jazz performance by saxophonist Dave Rempis.
Rempis will be joined by Jeff Albert on trombone, Josef Butts on bass and Marcello Benetti on drums.
The traditional Irish music of the Brock McGuire Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. Monday. The band features two of Ireland’s “most-celebrated musicians,” Paul Brock and Manus McGuire, and also features Garry O’Meara and Denis Carey, according to a news release from Cité des Arts. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
A hands-on Cajun cooking class is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Participants will learn how to cook gumbo, potato salad and bread pudding. Cost is $35. Cajun dance lessons will be offered at 3 p.m. for an additional $10. To register, call instructor Brandon Broussard at (337) 257-0801.
Dixacadie, a group of traditional Acadian dancers from The Cindy Comeau School of Dance in Nova Scotia, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12. The dance group, whose girls are 14 to 18 years old, was formed in 2000 and performed at the 2004 World Acadian Congress and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics with the group “Drum.”
A SteamPunk fashion workshop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13 to prepare folks for the upcoming SteamPunk Fair and Fashion Show set for Nov. 10. Participants are invited to bring an item of clothing or object they’d like to embellish. Cost is $10 for students and $20 for adults.
