6-year-old on scooter hit by car

Hundreds of people lifted candles Tuesday evening in memory of a 6-year-old boy who died Monday night after being hit by a car while playing on his scooter.

The ceremony was held at Live Oak Ballpark, where Tyler Myers had been picked up by helicopter in an unsuccessful rush to save his life just 24 hours earlier.

A neighbor, who was turning into his driveway, ran into the child Monday evening, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

The first-grader attended North Live Oak Elementary School, where a team of crisis-intervention counselors tried to comfort his classmates and teachers Tuesday, School Board member Kellee Hennessy Dickerson said.

The counselors tried to explain to the children what happened and gave them a chance to talk about it, Dickerson said.

The little boy “apparently was very vivacious and touched a lot of lives,” Dickerson said. “People were
numb.”

“Tyler was all boy,” said Vicki Picou, grandmother of one of the child’s close friends. “He was always up and down the street on his bike.”

In a statement read to the crowd at the ceremony , the child’s family said, “Tyler was the little sunshine of our lives.”

The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. Monday in a subdivision across the road from the ballpark, said Lori Steele, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The child was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Steele said.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the driver of the vehicle that struck the child as Brad Welch, 32, who lives on Rue de Fleur in Watson.

Welch has not been cited in the incident, and the case remains under investigation, Steele said.

The Tyler Myers Fund has been set up at Chase Bank to raise money to cover funeral expenses, said Paeton Burkett, the Denham Springs city attorney.

the advocate has to amend, apologize, clarify and correct more stories than any media outlet i have ever seen. you did nothing wrong, ndylsu. you just stated the obvious. no correction needed.

ndylsu, I for one completely understood all your posts. The story as originally posted almost read like it was a murder. It omitted too many facts that truthfully were already known at the time the Advocate was running it.

No one is trying to justify the death of the child. My initial comment was 1 sentence that those of you commenting seem to be reading far more into than what was meant. The Advocate, as do many other papers and media outlets, have a bad habit of reporting parts and pieces of an event in order to sensationalize it, rather than reporting the facts as they find them. At the time the 1st article was printed it was a known fact that the driver hadn't been charged. The Advocate left that out. It is my opinion this was left out on purpose to build intensity into the story. I did not like that they did this. That is all. As to the personal attack on the timing of my 1st post: Is there some waiting period to post a comment of which I am unaware?

I don't even understand why anyone was so quick to post anyway unless you are jumping out defending someone. The fact is a little boy died riding on a scotter. All kids ride bikes and scooters and should be able to do in their neighborhood, nothing else you have to say matters. It is a horrible accident, however in my opinion it had to be very careless on the drivers part to be pulling forward into a driveway and not see what's going on. If he is a good man I'm sure he feels awful and will deal with it for the rest of his life. But nothing takes away or justifies losing your 6 year old child. A lot of healing and forgiveness will have to happen eventually on both sides.

My comments were in line with The Advocate's story as it progressed. My first comment about the driver not being charged was simply to clarify this fact since The Advocate failed to report it in their 1st article. My second comment was another slap on the wrist to the Advocate for their haphazard reporting of the incident. It was an accident. The first 2 articles The Advocate wrote about it were shady to say the least. It seemed to me they were attempting to spin it into some reckless, hit, and run which it was not. My comments were meant purely to clarify what That Advocate failed to do on their own. The article that is up now at 9.26AM CST finally reports the event in a fairer light making it clear that 1) it was an accident; 2) the driver was not charged.

to ndylsu: I do not understand your comments. Are you upset the driver wasn't charged or not? I am not judging anyone in this situation, but I took your first comment to mean you thought the driver of car should have been charged. Seems like you were judging this situation more than others. About golf carts, 4 wheelers, etch on streets, the only thing I am wondering is why is a 6 year old boy riding a bike (according to neighbors) and scooter around the neighborhood without an adult watching him. I am just curious and not trying to judge a situation I was not a witness to.

Instead of judging a situation none of us have the right to let's read the article and ask The Advocate staff writer why they are trying to spin this immense tragedy into a murder mystery for their own amusement. The lack of facts seems to be leading this reporter to create a work of fiction around the event. No integrity.

Do any of you ever stop and think..."Maybe this isn't the time or place..."?

It's not up to the parish officials to do anything about it...it's up to the parents to keep their kids out of the street! It's called "common sense"!

I wonder if this child was in the street. Kids are riding 4 wheelers, golf carts, gators, and mules all over subdivision streets. It is, or was, just a matter of time before something like this happened. The parish officials will not even attempt to stop it. Wonder who is going to get sued over this. Maybe both the driver and the parish.

The driver of the vehicle was not charged.
