Stop violence golf tourney deadline set

Friday is the deadline to register for the Stop Domestic Violence golf tournament hosted by Women Outreaching Women. The Oct. 7 event at Greystone Country Club in Denham Springs will raise money for WOW’s emergency shelter in Livingston Parish for battered women and children.

The entry fee is $500 per team, which includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, prizes for the top 10 scores, a poker run, door prizes and a silent auction.

Soccer tryouts

Tryouts for the 2012-13 Livingston Parish middle school boys and girls soccer teams, the Livingston Parish Express, will be at South Park at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Interested students in fifth through eighth grades can attend any of the tryouts and are encouraged to attend on multiple tryout dates.

Those interested should bring cleats, shin guards and a No. 5 soccer ball. Tryouts are free.

The Livingston Parish Express Middle School teams provide an opportunity for middle school students to play in a school-structured program, organizers said. Since 2007, the teams have been both league and tournament champions. Call (225) 955-9149 with questions.

Walker High homecoming

Hunter sight-in

Due to Hurricane Isaac, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard, Walker Mayor Bobby Font and the Pelican State Friends of the National Rifle Association have rescheduled the free annual Hunters’ Sight-In. This service will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Center on Woodside Drive next to the Woodside Landfill. Only hunting rifles and pistols appropriate for hunting are eligible, organizers said.

All weapons must arrive unloaded with actions open. Ammo must be provided and coincide with the weapon. No reloads allowed. All targets, ear muffs, tools and cleaning equipment will be provided. Live Oak 5K run/walk

The Live Oak High 5K run/walk and One-Mile Fun Run will be Saturday. Race day registration is from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and will cost $25.
