NAACP Louisiana conference to meet
LAFAYETTE — The NAACP Louisiana State Conference of Adult Branches, Youth Councils and College Chapters will meet Sept. 27-30 at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ, 701 E. Pinhook Road, for its 70th annual state convention.
The convention will feature sessions focused on “developing both the capacity and specific business opportunities for minority-owned and disadvantaged businesses,” according to a news release.
Entrepreneur and author Michael V. Roberts of the Roberts Cos. of St. Louis will be the special guest speaker for the Freedom Fund dinner Saturday evening.

Poetry reading Saturday at ULL
LAFAYETTE — Prize-wining poet Traci Brimhall will read from her work at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ernest J. Gaines Center in the Edith Garland Dupré Library on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus.
The event is free and open to the public.
Brimhall is the author of “Our Lady of the Ruins,” which earned the 2011 Barnard Women Poets Prize, and “Rookery,” winner of the 2009 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award. She was the 2008-09 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing and teaches at Western Michigan University, where she is a doctoral associate and King/Chávez/Parks Fellow.
Beaux Arts Ball
to honor artist
LAFAYETTE — Digital visual effects artist Ray McIntyre Jr. will be honored at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s College of the Arts’ third annual Beaux Arts Ball on Oct. 5 with the college’s 2012 SPARK Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Beaux Arts Ball is a fundraiser for the college and will begin at 7 p.m. at the River Oaks Catering and Event Center, 520 Kaliste Saloom Road.
McIntyre’s studio, Pixel Magic, has two locations — one in Los Angeles and in the university’s research park at the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise Center.
McIntyre’s screen credits include “Secretariat,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and “The Help.”
He was nominated for an Emmy in 1996 for HBO’s “Tuskegee Airmen.”
In 2004, McIntyre won the Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects for his work in “The Last Samurai.” He also won an International Monitor Award in 1998 for his work in “Casper Meets Wendy.”
Tickets are $75 per person or $600 for a table of eight and include a buffet dinner.
Music will be provided by the UL Lafayette Jazz Ensemble. The evening also will include silent and live art auctions.
