Letters: In Tampa, up is down, left is right

I watched the Republican National Convention hoping to get some clarification on several vital issues. Unfortunately, I am even more confused now than I was before. Here is a short list of reasons for my befuddlement:

For the last six months (seems like six years) we have heard over and over from the Republicans that Barack Obama is not fit to be president because he has no private sector experience. But Mitt Romney has chosen as his running mate (and the man who will be one heartbeat away from the presidency) someone who has been working for the federal government for the last 22 years.

Paul Ryan has had only minimal experience in the private sector including part-time employment with Oscar Mayer that included driving the weinermobile. He has no other private sector experience on record that I can find.

The Republicans claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility but Paul Ryan voted for TARP, the unfunded Medicare drug benefit, the “Bridge to Nowhere,” and many other big spending programs. Ryan’s proposed budget doesn’t balance until 2040.

Romney claims that he will give everyone a 20 percent tax cut while increasing defense spending and preserving both Medicare and Social Security. This claim far surpasses the bounds of the mathematically possible. Romney won’t divulge the actual details of his plan because “it can’t be scored.” That’s Washingtonese for “the details don’t make any sense either.”

I have heard both Romney and Ryan call for more civility in the current campaign. This call was renewed at the Republican convention. However, every time I see a news story quoting Romney’s call for more-respectful discourse, the very next story is invariably about some new Romney-sponsored attack ad. Additionally, every fact-checking organization in the country has disproved the Romney/Ryan claims regarding welfare reform, Medicare and many other false statements. One of the Romney campaign managers recently said that they weren’t going to let fact-checkers “dictate” to their campaign.

Perhaps the craziest thing of all is that the theme of the entire Republican convention was “We Built It.” Sadly, every single speaker at the convention who had an “I built this” story to tell owed their success to government contracts, loans or tax credits. One woman had apparently made a fortune teaching other people how to acquire lucrative government contracts. What exactly did she build?

I’m not sure what is going on here. Maybe Republicans just speak a different language where up is down and black is white.

Whatever it is, you don’t have to do very extensive research to find out that almost everything they say is either false or nonsensical.

Attila, wow, you really must be delusional. Where did I say I “love to hate” anyone? Where did I say that the top 5% income earners break the law? That is one problem that I have with the Tea Partiers and their cabal, Tea Party fanatics like Attila just make stuff up and when faced with facts they resort to whining about how abused they are or the how put upon the wealthy are. I present facts about why the top 5% of American earners SHOULD pay more tax than they do and Attila accuses me of hating people, must suck to be him.

2) Comment by Attila - 07/09/2012

@Lannomac: The people you love to hate are committing no crime. If they were the IRS would be all over them before you could blink. They are taking advantage of legal "loopholes". If the amount that Romney and others wealthy people pay is such an obsession to you why not work to have the laws changed instead of b'tching and moaning about how "unfair" it is. It must really suck to be as eaten up with class envy and jealousy as you and most of those of like mind. If you people would channel that energy into to doing something constructive, who knows, you just might find peace and the "fairness" that so consumes you.

The last statement is a little funny considering the DNC Chair, Debbie whoever, got caught LYING, and this is only one of the many other lies at the DNC convention. The Democrat Convention was such a "JOKE". Oh, where were all the great Occupy people. Didn't hear much from them... guess they were looking for cop cars so they could use the restroom. And all the great details of how Obama and Biden are going to make things better... the details were just too much. Oh, where is Obama's budget...oh, he never had one passed. Oh, how much did Obama cut the deficit...oh, he raised the deficit over $5 trillion...

Conventions are what they are. It's propaganda on both side & everybody knows it. But you know what I didn't hear at the Republican Convention? Thousands of Republicans yelling "NO!!!" at a suggestion to add God's name in their platform. That was the most memorable moment of the Democratic convention for me. I'll be keeping that in mind Nov. 6th (59 days).

The comment about Obama saving the US auto industry is hilarious. Check out how many GM jobs are in China, Mexico & S. Korea.

a half truth is a lie . was there a net gain of 3.5 million jobs ? if all who were able to work were included in the count would unemployment be 8.1 percent ? manipulation of numbers is cool ..,.

The republicans have but one mantra -- cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations. They say if that happens, then we will see explosive job growth. What a lie! Taxes are the lowest they have ever been, therefore we should be drowning in jobs. So where are the jobs? If you look at the record (history) job growth and economic expansion have always occurred when taxes were higher. Up to the 1960's taxes were as high as 90%, yet that did not deter anyone from starting a company. It did not keep corporations from expanding. I am not saying that we should go back to 90% tax rates. What I am saying is that the republicans mantra about taxes is wrong. And a lie.

Just imagine if another major party in the world lived in the fantasy and self-satisfied delusion that passes for policy in the GOP. I can - - we were engaged in a fifty year cold war with it once.

Attila, we Progressives/Liberals/Sane Americans sleep well at night because truth is on our side. The truth is that the wealthiest 5% of Americans pay about 65% of taxes because they OWN 69% of America’s wealth, while 95% of Americans (including you and me) split up 31% of all the wealth in the USA. The top 1% pay more taxes because they earn 29% of all income generated in the USA. The wealthiest 5% of Americans pay more tax because they are getting wealthier, while the bottom 95% of Americans earn less and less. The wealthiest 5% of Americans are not suffering an undue burden of taxation, in fact people like Mitt Romney paid a smaller percentage of income than I did (an I am nowhere near the top 5%!). I simple makes my blood boil to see the wealthiest Americans whine and complain that they have to pay taxes, while they funnel money offshore, hire an army of CPAs to create tax shelters and ship manufacturing plants to China. I don’t expect wealthy Americans to carry the everyone’s load, but I do expect them to carry their own load!

15) Comment by Whatnow - 07/09/2012

BTW, Obama did present a budget. In a 99-0 vote, all of the senators present rejected the president’s blueprint. It’s the second year in a row the Senate has voted down Obama’s budget. Wow!

The DNC was nothing but abortion, gays, illegals and welfare. Geesh, what a legacy! I watched both and never got the feeling of pride in being an American with the DNC. I felt like I was listening to Kim Jong Il. They blame Romney for outsourcing while lying through their teeth. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/12/obama-jobs-council-outsourcing_n_1666443.html. The DNC was a complete farce and rampant with hypocrisy. I find that all the things Obama is guilty of, he accuses his opponent first to get the heat off of himself. Biggest hypocrite of them all.

This letter all can apply to both parties, so either vote for an independent or vote the least of the 2 evils in the main 2 political parties. One has already proved he cannot lead this country very well and has taken 4 years to prove it, so maybe we just need to try a new one. I just HOPE I still have some CHANGE left in my pocket by the time the election gets here.

@Lannomac: Puulleezzee! How do liberals sleep at night with that "tax cuts for the rich...tax cuts for the rich" psychobabble running roughshod through their heads. The top 5% of earners pay 65% of the taxes...how much more would you have them pay; 70, 80, 90%? A new CBO report found the bottom 20 percent of American earners paid just three-tenths of a percent of the total tax burden, while the richest 20 percent paid 67.9 percent of taxes. Since the original report came out, the system has been getting more progressive, with the “rich” paying more. So for all the people screaming “the rich don’t pay their fair share” — considering they already pay far more than other groups, how much more should the upper income levels pay to be “fair” in your view? And is it acceptable for about half to pay no federal income tax? Also, is it "fair" for a family of 5 with an income of over 49K be eligible for over 5K in Earned Income Tax Credit? If you don't believe that research it as I did. You just may learn something.

Yep, the choice is simple, stay with a President that averted another Great Depression, saved the American automobile industry and killed Osama bin Laden, or revert to the same policies that caused the economic crisis and let Osama bin Laden run loose for over 10 years. The USA went with hope and change last time and was rewarded with leadership that got the USA out of Iraq, dodged another Great Depression, crippled al Qaeda and eliminated (with extreme prejudice!) Osama bin Laden.

21) Comment by tradewinns - 07/09/2012

the choice is simple, continued failure or a better chance of a rebound with a proven businessman. there are only two choices. the country went with hope and change last time. that hasn't worked out. this time i hope we change presidents!

Mr. Hales’ only mistake was to expect logic, honesty and reason at the Tea Party (Republican) Convention. I had no such illusions and was not surprised that the Tea Party (Republican) Convention was nothing more than a series Karl Rove talking points strung together and presented as speeches. The Tea Party (Republican) Convention is focused exclusively on being Anti-Obama and did not even pay lip service to solutions to most of major issues facing America. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan did not even mention the tens of thousands of American troops still fighting in Afghanistan, how to bring them home or how we can care for those American soldiers, airmen, Marines and sailors wounded in action. I guess their solution to the war in Afghanistan is another tax cut for the wealthiest Americans. The one thing Mitt Romney said that cannot be disputed is that this election is about a choice, a choice between moving forward toward economic prosperity with the tried and true Keynesian economic solutions, or sinking further into economic stagnation with Trickle-Down economic fantasies disasters. I think the most striking difference between the conventions was that the Democratic Convention was a boisterous celebration of being an American, with pride in our troops, concern for our wounded and a realistic plan for economic prosperity. While the Tea Party (Republican) Convention was negative and rancorous, focused on everything wrong with America and only offering one solution, TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY.

23) Comment by DMJ - 07/09/2012

Their entire convention was based on lies and taking one Obama quote out of context. And don't get me started on the weird Clint Eastwood/ Obama hallucination thing. Not a very successful convention, in my opinion.

It's amazing that Mr. Hale is confused and blames it on what he heard in Tampa; to a casual reader of his letter it seems that both his confusion and false assumptions can doubtless be ascribed to his obvious dependence upon Democrat talking points as layed out by Wasserman-Shultz, i.e. the spokesperson for the Democrats who is rumored to have a lot in common with Bagdad Bob.

25) Comment by gvm - 07/09/2012

@LSUinVail: American businesses have relied on government assistance (corporate welfare) from day one. The two go hand in hand. Stop being obtuse.

26) Comment by gvm - 07/09/2012

@speakthetruth: I'm sorry I can't deconstruct your diatribe piece by piece right now - I have to go to work. That said, I'll just speak to only one of your many dubious points. To the extent that this country has become divided over the last 4 years, you have only the Tea Party "patriots" and your own mindless leaders in the GOP to blame for that. From the outset thy have relied on race baiting and obstructionist tactics to sabotage this president. Has he been perfect? Of course not, but he's performed at level that's head and shoulders above what any GOP president could have considering the circumstances. If you would take off your blinders you'd see that you're on the wrong side of history on this. Take your head out of the sand - you and your like-minded cohorts are beginning to look ridiculous.

You might be an economic illiterate if you think roads and bridges built American businesses, and not the other way around.

30) Comment by speakthetruth - 07/09/2012

Spoken like a true democrat. Please take the blinders off. Lets start at the top; First you complain of the Republicans choosing Ryan with little experience in the private sector. You are comparing a potential Vice President with little experience to a President with NO experience. The attack ads are coming from both sides, not much to say there, but Obama has been dividing this country for the 4 years he has been in office. Paul Ryan has submitted a budget, Obama has never submitted a budget. Ryan did say where the money was coming from to fund give tax cuts and continue to fund SS and Medicare. Romney hasn't given details of his plans because there are too many organizations out there working for Obama that are there just to put spin on everything, good or bad. It has been said there is so much waste in the entitlement programs that would be where to start, so Obama states the Republicans are going to starve people. The Republicans have called for more civility in the campaign but you can only take so much mud thrown at you before you have to throw some back. Turn the channel off of CNN (then they would only have 12 viewers) and try to educate yourself more. Obama targets people like you that can't see past the hand they hold in front of their face because the government told them to hold their hand there. Look at how divided this country has gotten in the last 4 years, look what it cost to buy groceries now (that is if you buy your own), look what it cost to put gas in your vehicle ( that is if you work and have to drive a vehicle), look at how many people have gotten on government assistance programs since Obama came in office. The national dept just reach 16 trillion!!!! Do you understand how that much dept is going to effect all the working people???? There not enough space here to explain it but my bet is you don't or you would have figured out how to remove your hand from in front of your face by now. I speak the truth.
