Ex-Morganza police chief Landry dies

Carl Landry Jr., former Morganza police chief and part-time Pointe Coupee Parish sheriff’s deputy, died shortly after midnight Wednesday at Pointe Coupee General Hospital.

Landry, 80, died after years of suffering from health-related issues, his daughter, Elizabeth Langlois, said Thursday.

He is survived by Langlois, his only child; Carol Ann Landry, his sister; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Roads from 9 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial in the church at 10 a.m. Interment follows in False River Memorial Park.

Langlois said that before her father was appointed police chief of the village of Morganza in 1986, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a car salesman for many years. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Louisiana Sheriff’s Association.

Landry was forced to retire as police chief in 2001 after he was injured on the job, said Brett Robillard, a detective with the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Langlois said her father enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, horseback riding and collecting cowboy boots.

“Everyone trusted my Daddy,” Langlois said about her father’s tenure as police chief. “He loved Morganza. He just had a deep concern for his community.”
