Shooting victim dies

A man shot during a robbery at a downtown gas station early Aug. 7 has died, the East Baton Rouge Parish coroner said Sunday.

Bobby Nelson, 43, 9092 Miliken Bend, Denham Springs, was shot at the Chevron service station at 501 St. Ferdinand St., police have said.

Nelson died Thursday, and the Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy on him Friday, said Dr. Beau Clark.

Two Port Allen men — Phillip Carter, 21, 250 N. 14th St., and Robert Pierson, 17, 5109 Rebelle Lane — have been arrested in the shooting.

Carter and Pierson approached Nelson, a tractor-trailer driver, as he was unloading fuel into the gas station’s underground tanks, police said at the time.

The men robbed Nelson of his wallet and then shot him twice in the leg before running away, police said.

Police found Nelson just after 3 a.m. on the ground next to his tractor trailer.

Carter and Pierson were booked into the Parish Prison on one count each of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and resisting arrest.

Police spokesman Cpl. Tommy Stubbs said Sunday Carter and Pierson’s initial charges will be upgraded to first-degree murder.

Another typical day in Baton Rouge... A man lost his life just trying to do his job. A couple more vermin will get life sentences, but that really doesn't matter much when they reproduce faster than we can cage them.

And yes, I am more than implying when the man got into the P/U truck with no words exchanged between him and the driver it was a pre-arranged thing and the man trying to get me to give him a ride was up to no good. By the way, I wanted Herman Cain to be the GOP nominee and was very disappointed when he dropped out of the race over questionable things that allegedly happened in the late 90's. I also have great respect for Allen West, Juan Williams... need I go on? :)

Not quite sure what the rubber stamp comment is about but I'm a 58 year old white woman who is a Conservative and both times, the men were well into their 60's that approached us so the "under 30" part means nothing to me either. And even though I lost a son who was 16 to murder in a rural area shot by a 34 year old man he hunted with, I am against gun control. The man who asked for a ride harassed my friend and me for almost 5 minutes while I politely tried to tell him no over and over - I told him we were only going a few blocks to Argosy etc and he had an answer for all until I finally said no, I don't give rides to strangers. Then as soon as we pulled away from the gas pumps, a P/U pulls up and without him or the driver exchanging a word, the man got into the truck. By the way, I find it to be the uneducated, under 30, and "people of color" to be the ones that have views to the left even though their race has the highest unemployment rate in the country - almost double the national average - and the ones I've tried to discuss issues with have no clue about any of them yet they blindly follow Obama who said in 2009 if he hadn't fixed the economy in 3 years, he'd be a one-term president. Then when his policies failed, which were obviously bad ones before implemented, it's blame Bush and Libs rant about 8 years of Bush and know so little about the way things work in DC they don't understand what it means that the Democrats had control of Congress the last 2 years of the Bush presidency. He's said many things that have proven to be the opposite of his actions once he became president.

I see this gas station hasn't changed. Both times I've stopped there for gas during the daytime, I've been approached by men either wanting a ride or a handout. The two times were about 15 years apart and it seems whoever owns this place would make sure no one harasses the customers and that men aren't allowed to hang out with beer in paper bags near the dumpsters. The first time when a man asked for a ride, I had a friend with me and we were on our way to Argosy and I told him no, as 2 women, we didn't allow men we didn't know in my car. He was rather insistent then as soon as I drove away, a pickup drove up and he got in it. The 2nd time, I was with my husband and a man asked for money. NOT COOL!

Why do we have to have a trial? Can we just hang them at the Old State Capital and be done with it?
