Lafayette deputy marshal shoots, kills suspect

State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 20-year-old Lafayette man dead.

The shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, when a deputy with the Lafayette City Marshal’s Office shot Devante Brown after Brown produced a handgun and exchanged gunfire with the deputy, according to Trooper Stephen Hammons, spokesman for the State Police.

Brown was a suspect in a narcotics transaction that had just taken place, Hammons said.

Brown fled on foot and was chased into the 100 block of Shamrock Drive by Lafayette police officers, Hammons said.

The deputy marshal found Brown in the area after the deputy responded to a call for assistance from the police, Hammons said.

During the exchange of gunfire, Brown was struck multiple times. He later died from his injuries, Hammons said.

The deputy marshal, whose name was not released, was not injured, Hammons said.

Lafayette City Marshal Earl “Nickey” Picard deferred all questions about the incident to State Police.

MEM, when you crawl out of your safe-room and come down from your meth binge, you might be able to see that this was not a senseless death. Individuals don't get to pick and choose which laws they wish to follow, majority rules as long as there is no conflict with the Constitution. And the Constitution does not mean what you individually think it means. It is interpreted by very learned justices who are appointed by a (for the most part) majority elected president and are affirmed by a majority elected senate. The majority does not want narcotics and other controlled dangerous substances to be legal so it isn't, and all must abide by the law. When you break the law, police will try to stop you. When you resist the police and shoot at them, you will be shot. When you are shot, sometimes you die. What about this process does not make sense to you?

@MEM: War on Drugs didn't kill this thug, his thugness did. If drugs were legal this low life would be participating in some other criminal enterprise so that he wouldn't have to do an honest day's work and keep living off daddy gubmit. His fatal moment occurred when he decided to attempt 1st degree murder and to take the life of an officer, rather than accepting his punishment and using it to better his worthless life. One less mouth for me to feed.
