Cut Off woman killed in head-on collision

One person was killed in a three-vehicle crash Saturday on La. 308 in Lafourche Parish, State Police said.

Brian Gros, 46, of Lockport, was driving a 2006 Volvo semi-tractor south on La. 308 just south of Valentine around 10:30 a.m. when he came around a curve and saw a 2006 International semi-tractor slowing down, Trooper Evan Harrell said in a news release.

Gros steered left to avoid hitting the International semi-tractor and entered the northbound traffic lane, where he collided head-on with a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer, Harrell said.

The impact pushed the Lancer, driven by Shantelle Hancock, 29, of Cut Off, into the International semi-tractor, driven by Mitchell Brown, 50, of Lafayette, Harrell said.

Hancock, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office, Harrell said.

Gros, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a Thibodaux hospital, Harrell said.

Brown, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the crash, Harrell said. However, troopers took blood samples from Gros for analysis and routine toxicology tests are pending at the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office for Hancock, Harrell said.

Brown submitted to a breath test, which showed no alcohol in his system, Harrell said.

The wreck remains under investigation, Harrell said.
