Program to rededicate historical marker

ZACHARY — The Zachary Historical Association is scheduled to rededicate a historical marker Sunday that recalls the first convention of delegates dissatisfied with Spanish rule in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana.

The program will begin at 3 p.m. at the marker site, on La. 964 across from the entrance to Azalea Rest Cemetery.

The public is invited to attend and to participate in additional activities at nearby Annison Plantation home.

The meetings held July 25-27 and Aug. 13-15, 1810, eventually led to the overthrow of the Spanish fort at Baton Rouge and the formation of the West Florida Republic.

The marker was one of many installed across East Baton Rouge Parish during the administration of Mayor-President Pat Screen, but a driver later ran off the road and knocked it down, Darrell McClung, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, said in 2010.

Dr. Salvador Lusco saved the marker and turned it over to McClung for restoration, McClung said.

Betty Tucker said re-enactors dressed in Colonial-era costumes will raise and lower the West Florida Republic’s flag and raise the 15-star American flag that was flown over the Florida Parishes after the
United States annexed the territory.
