Belle Rose man dies after fistfight with another man

PAINCOURTVILLE — A 43-year-old man injured in a fistfight with another man early Monday died Tuesday night in a hospital, the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday.

Brett Hebert, 6859 La. 1, Belle Rose, was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Thibodaux Regional Medical Center after being taken off a ventilator, deputies said in a news release.

Sheriff’s detectives interviewed the other man involved in the fight, but no arrests had been made as of early Wednesday afternoon, deputies said.

Hebert had gotten into an argument that escalated into a fistfight with the other man at a Paincourtville residence shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, deputies said.

Witnesses told deputies investigating the case that at one point, Hebert was struck by his opponent and fell to the ground, deputies said.

Arriving deputies found Hebert lying on the ground, unresponsive, in a front yard on St. Peter Street, deputies said.

Emergency responders were able to restart Hebert’s heart, but he could not breathe without assistance, deputies said.

Detectives were waiting on autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death and have additional interviews to make, Sheriff Mike Waguespack said in an interview Wednesday.

Detectives also have notified 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin of their preliminary findings, the sheriff said.

Waguespack declined to identify the other man in the fight since deputies have not made an arrest and were working to make sure they have an accurate identification.
