School registration easier
LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Parish school system is making it easier for parents to register new students for school by extending registration hours and centralizing the process at one location, the former Lerosen Elementary School at 516 E. Pinhook Road.
Three registration dates are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. Administrators will be available to answer questions about the district or ancillary services available to students, such as special education, student health services and homeless services.
Registration is required for families new to the district or for families that have moved to a different school zone, said Bradley Cruice, district health and wellness director.
Cruice said district Superintendent Pat Cooper wanted to provide parents with “one-stop shopping,” especially for those parents who need to enroll their children at different schools or enroll them for special services, which typically requires a separate trip to the central office or another school system site.
The Lerosen campus is accessible by city bus via route 70, according to a news release.
Parents may also register at the child’s zoned school during regular school hours starting Wednesday, but district personnel to assist enrollment in special services won’t be available at the schools, Cruice said.
The registration process is not necessary for students who will attend a new school due to academic progression, such as students moving from their zoned middle school into their zoned high school, he said.
Forms needed for registration may be downloaded at http://www.lpssonline.com or may be picked up starting Monday at any public school or at the school system central office at 113 Chaplin Drive.
Parents will need to provide the following documents for registration: birth certificate, proof of residence: a current utility bill (electricity/gas/water) in the parent’s or guardian’s name, a Social Security card (if available), last report card, immunization records, and any other documentation required for ancillary services.
District staff with the following ancillary services will be available at the Lerosen registration site: student services, special education, 504, ESL, health services/ school nurse, transportation, homeless services, child welfare and attendance, and child nutrition/school lunch.
