Our Views: Heckling was a low blow

We’re generally not happy when political leaders are booed and heckled while trying to give a speech. Our society is supposed to be grounded in civil discourse. That free exchange of ideas is hampered when listeners boo and heckle a speaker. The true test of civility is being able to give a speaker a fair hearing — even a speaker with whom we might disagree.

That’s why we were so dismayed when President Barack Obama was heckled during a 2009 speech before Congress. That’s why we’re equally saddened by how GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney was treated during his speech before the NAACP. Romney was booed and heckled while he addressed the audience.

We understand that the NAACP has typically been more receptive to Democratic presidential candidates. We know that many members of the organization have a special fondness for President Barack Obama.

But that was no excuse to heckle and boo Romney when he criticized Obama’s policies and proposed alternatives. We suspect that the NAACP would have criticized Romney if he had chosen not to appear before the national organization. But why should any speaker appear before a group that acts in such an uncivil manner?

If those who booed and heckled Romney hoped to dim his political appeal by treating him so dismissively, they probably failed. One possible benefit in Romney’s appearance before the NAACP was its suggestion that he’s trying to be inclusive, a message that might appeal to swing voters. In booing and heckling Romney, his opponents made him seem sympathetic. They, in turn, seemed intolerant.

The heckling and booing was beneath the dignity of the NAACP. This isn’t what civilized debate is supposed to be about.

two points ; we'd be better off in the realization that we all have more in common than different , talking down to someone doesn't help , bringing to my second point . it is almost impossible for any group or organization to control the actions of all around it , especially those on the fringe or attention seekers on the outside . nor should it be poorly characterized by their actions ...

Folks with the belief system that the "I am from the government and I am here to help you" simply continue to drink the kool aid and follow the pied piper. I find it the height of hypocrisy that most of the people calling for more taxes on me and the rest of the middle class, and the true job creators of this country are all filthy rich. Neither BHO, or any other politician can take credit for "creating" jobs. The only jobs that the government can create or more government jobs. Governments role in job creation is to insure that the rules, regulations and tax policies are conducive to job expansion by the private sector. The liberals have failed miserably at that. Pelosi et al don't have a bit of a problem being the shining benefactor to "those less fortunate" while spending someone else's money to do it. Why not require every member of Congress and those on the federal payroll who are millionaires divulge their tax returns just like the libs are screaming for Romney to do. Care to take a guess as to how many of them take advantage of the same tax "loopholes" that Democrats are pillorying Romney over; proving once again that if it weren't for double standards, Democrats would have no standards at all. I also wonder when was the last time that those continually berate and condemn those who have been successful for "not paying their fair share" have asked a poor man for a job? Hmmmmm?

It is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People They obvious think Obama being black will advance colored people no matter what he does to the country. I also wish that the news media would use the full name at least once in an article instead of glossing over with benign abbreviation.

The whole apologist argument is weak. The previous occupant of the White House had so damaged this country's reputation abroad it was imperative that President Obama go about mending fences. Had they not conducted foreign policy with the grace and adeptness of a bull in a china shop, such would not have been necessary. I wonder if Osama bin Laden would agree that the president is an apologist. President Obama's biggest mistake, in my opinion, is that he believed bipartisan cooperation with the current crop of Rethuglicans was possible. I would have like to have seen him cut them off at the knees from the outset.

@GoldenSage: Your name is apparently a misnomer. That aside, let me assure you that I am not some blind ideologue who believes everything anyone from either party says - I know how to draw conclusions from data I can access and inferences I can make on the ground. The one thing government does not need is a "businessman" in the oval office. Rather, the country needs someone who is diplomatic and able to represent this country abroad in a dignified manner - not as an arrogant blowhard like previous presidents have done. President Obama has already proven he can do this. Romney can't even take the heat of the campaign trail. How can you expect him to handle the pressures of the presidency? I love how you guys manufacture division by talking about class warfare. If it exists now, then it surely didn't just come into existence. Where were you clowns ten or twenty years ago with your talk about class warfare? Knowing Louisiana as I do, I know that the biggest opposition to President Obama has less to do with his policies and more to do with the color of his skin. When a B grade actor or a C- student sat in the oval office I saw none of this faux outrage. What's the difference? You need to accept that the world has changed significantly in the last four years; it'll never again be what it used to be. Get used to it.

19) Comment by GoldenSage - 14/07/2012

Someone writes that poor people don't mean anything to Romney. Well, idiot, do you believe poor people mean anything to Soros, Obama, Nancy, Harry, and all the other rich Progressives and Democrats. If you do, then I have swamp land to sell you. Classwarfare is "class" warfare, not selective warfare. The rich and wealthy have no labels. A rich Obama cares less for you than a rich Romney because, at least, Romney is a business person looking to get ahead. Obama is a rich person looking for subjects to bow and kiss his ring, which many are doing today. Otherwords, I believe, Romney is more likely to follow his religious beliefs than Obama, who knows what religious beliefs he truly has since Progressives and Liberals are more likely to be godless. Anyway, rich is rich and I assure you Obama no more thinks about the poor than any other rich "normal" politician. There are exceptions, but Obama is no exception except he is a bigger liar.

@Attila: I have made very minor editorial changes to your post because it really states my opinion of the folks in attendance at the GOP "debates" earlier this year pretty well. My changes are in CAPS so it'll be easier for you you to follow. Revised version: "No one in attendance at THOSE DEBATES who booed or condoned it has a modicum of class anyway. Those people do what they do...it is in their DNA...their share their ignorance as a badge of honor, and perpetuate the myth in the CONSERVATIVE community that their lot in life is the fault of the GOVERNMENT. Silly people...fairy tales are for kids."

22) Comment by gvm - 14/07/2012

@Nimby Do you even know how the "War on Poverty" came to be? I guess not because if you did you'd see how ignorant your post is. The so-called war on poverty resulted from legislation introduced in 1964 to address an unnecessarily high NATIONAL poverty rate - not an African American poverty rate as your post seems to imply. The thrust of the post I made, to which I suppose you're responding to, was that contrary to popular belief poor and middle class people mean absolutely nothing to Romney, et al. To believe otherwise is just plain stupid. If the GOP is so concerned with the middle class, why is that it was on their watch that the middle class witnessed the economic rug being pulled out from under them? The GOP seems to have pulled off a case of mass hypnosis through the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox News and other equally asinine sources. The fact that so many broke or very nearly broke people are courting the exact same folks who brought them, in many cases, to their lowly state is nothing short of astounding. You speak of preferential programs. Please tell me who, besides the mythical "job creators" ever benefited from such programs? Just because you've managed to avoid being on the street doesn't mean it was entirely due to your own efforts. Introspective and humble people realize as much but loud intellectually challenged folks don't. Which one are you?

23) Comment by nimby? - 14/07/2012

gvm , isn't this the same methodology the democratic party is using within the african american community ? the war on poverty enters a 4th generation . in spite of preferential programs , countless monies bestowed upon under achievement is still the norm . immigrants enter the country , take advantage of the same programs and in many cases are able to achieve success in one generation , how is this ? could it be sense of value , responsibility , proper work ethic , motivation , please explain ? \\ \\

24) Comment by gvm - 14/07/2012

@CBCS (and other like minded "patriots"): Sorry to have to tell you this but, aside from the fact that he'll likely not get many votes from members of the NAACP, Romney and the others in the upper echelon of the GOP make very few distinctions between you and NAACP folks. It's unfortunate you don't have sense enough to realize that. At bottom you're just a potential vote - nothing more. I remain constantly amazed that the GOP is able to pull the wool over your eyes so completely, and for that, I have to give them credit. To get an idea of what a Romney presidency would look like, just imagine Bobby Jindal's disastrous gubernatorial reign - on steroids. You may end up changing your name to CountryBoyCatchinHell. I wish you luck though.

Tea_Slayer , shall I spell it out for you . most of those "tea baggers carrying radical racist signs" were not members of the tea party , nor were they republicans , nor were they democrats . many were associated with local media outlets trying to create sensation in an otherwise boring story , old white people are pretty dull . and the media are not going to embarrass themself , so little attention . the majority were trolls . I'm sure you know what a troll is and what they stand for . evidence is the same at the OWS rallies , the majority of trouble was caused by those with no association to the group . just self indulgent knuckleheads looking for attention . Do you really wish to associate yourself with that sort of language? Shame on you if you do!

I disagree with the Advocate's opinion. Why not boo? It is a reasonably "civilized" way of showing contempt for ones opinions. Would you rather they physically assaulted him? I'm white and I would boo Romney. The guy is a right-wing puppet with no thoughts of his own. President Obama pushed the PPACA, which was modeled after Romney's health care act in Massachusetts. Now Romney says he's against it. What hypocrisy. And why won't Romney release his tax returns? He's hiding something. Romney is trying to hide the lie that he was not in charge of Bain when in fact, he was.

Mitt Romney is clearly out of his element on the national stage. As I've said before, he is not: intelligent, articulate, principled, capable or resolute. Nor does he inspire confidence. Up to this point he's talked incessantly about his prowess with respect to job creation - what he conveniently leaves out is that the world economy is in shambles. There are those, like Romney, who'd have you believe that America exists in a vacuum and therefore is not impacted by what goes on in the rest of the world. That is a lie. There are no policies that he can put in place that would result in a drastic turnaround from where things are now - it's not in any one nation's control. Just as some have accepted the fact that this generation may be the first not to have the economic stability their parents had, we may also have to accept the possibility that the present state of affairs represents the new normal

President Obama was heckled by a sitting member of Congress during a State of the Union address. He had a member of the conservative media interrupt prepared remarks to throw a sound bite bomb. He had a governor wave her finger in his face. The disrespect shown him has been truly unique and unprecedented. Sure, W had a shoe thrown at him, but that was one of the newly freed Iraqis, and he went to jail. Bottom line- you respect the office even if you don't respect the man holding it. I want to cancel my subscription to the Advocate. I get it delivered each day. In case you want to know the reason, it is in protest to your editor's "Heckling a low blow" opinion in the Friday, July 13, 2012 edition. The current President has been booed, heckled and called names over and over. People have been disrespectful to the office of the President and to the man. I haven't seen your comments when these people have done this to the President; other than your comment about the President's 2009 speech, as if that's the only time it's happened. I don't appreciate your comments on poor Mitt getting booed at the NAACP when he said he would cut out Obamacare. He knew he would get that reaction. For somone who doesn't want his own plan of Romneycare called by that name, he turned around and did the exact same thing to the President and at the same time showed disrespect to those in attendance. He deserved the boos. There are many people in the REAL world who want the Affordable Care Act. For you to talk about poor Mitt was end of the line for me and your right-wing rag. How do I cancel? Signed--a white, male fair & independent thinker.

58) Comment by DMJ - 13/07/2012

I think Romney giving a speech to the NAACP was actually pretty shrewd. Sure, he knows he's not going to get their votes, especially after endorsing Paul Ryan's budget, calling for the repeal of the ACA and endorsing voter ID laws designed to disenfranchise minorities. But he wasn't speaking to the people in the room. He was speaking to swing voters who don't like black people. Getting booed by the NAACP looks good to racist independents. Still...the NAACP should've known better. It made their organization look bad, it was disrespectful and it may have helped the guy they definitely don't want to be president, if only a little. Moreoever, you shouldn't boo a guest. If you don't like him....don't invite him to come speak in the first place or go to one of his rallies and boo him there.

This is no big surprise these people have no class they are all about being racist or does the meaning of NAACP not sort of give that away to anyone with a lick of sense. What is even more ridiculous is having the AG Eric Holder go to the NAACP gathering to talk about voter ID laws he is fighting in states and how requiring photo ID to vote disenfranchises poor voters. Yet for some reason you needed TWO forms of ID just to go listen to him belly ache about why you shouldn't need to produce ID to vote! That is like going to hear a speaker talk about people abusing animals and being made to kick a couple of dogs on their way in the door! Who can possible think this makes sense or isn't beyond hypocritical. I care more about knowing who is supposed to be voting than who is going to see that lying piece of dung!
