No one injured in house fire

ZACHARY — Thirty-four firefighters battled a blaze that caused heavy damage to a Jacock Road residence north of the city Monday morning, Zachary Fire Chief Danny Kimble said.

The cause of the blaze at 23006 Jacock Road is under investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office and the Baton Rouge Arson Task Force, Kimble said.

No one was at home when the fire was reported at 8:55 a.m., and no one was injured in fighting the fire, he said.

Kimble said he called for help from the Baker, Central and Slaughter fire departments because of the size of the structure, the extent to which the fire had spread through the house and the weather conditions.

“We had a good turnout,” he said.

Based on an assessment of the fire damage, firefighters believe the blaze may have started in a utility room of the two-story home.

Kimble said the fire was brought under control at 9:53 a.m., with the fire damage contained mainly to a large, attached garage, the attic and the kitchen. He estimated about 25 percent of the structure had fire damage and said the main living area of the home had heat and smoke damage.

“I’m very pleased with the outcome, considering what could have happened,” Kimble said, adding that the fire was coming through the roof when firefighters arrived.

A water line on the rural East Baton Rouge Parish road provided enough water for firefighters to bring the blaze under control without having to rely on tank trucks shuttling water to the scene.
