Man injured, traffic snarled in shooting
Baton Rouge police are investigating a shooting on the Interstate 10 Bridge Wednesday that left a man in critical condition and snarled Fourth of July traffic for hours, a police spokesman said.
Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said investigators believe the shooter may have followed the 27-year-old victim as he drove away from a woman’s house in Port Allen where the two men had been arguing.
As traffic slowed on the I-10 Bridge over the Mississippi River, a gunman approached and fired multiple shots into the victim’s car at about 6:35 p.m. before driving away, McKneely said. Police had a suspect in custody but later released him, saying they did not have “enough probable cause,” McKneely said.
Police were dispatched to the scene to check on the car stalled in traffic.
The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition, though he is expected to survive, McKneely said.
Police closed off the Interstate for two hours while they investigated the shooting.
