Burned bread causes trash fire
Firefighters believe bread burned in a small fire caused a larger fire in a trash trailer Sunday at a bakery on Florida Boulevard, a Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman said.
Material burned in the first fire, mostly bread and wrappers, was being thrown out through a chute into a trailer used to discard old bread at the Flowers Bakery at 1501 Florida Blvd., Robert Combs said in a news release.
The material, which likely still had heat contained in it, ignited loaves of bread that were already in the trailer, Combs said.
The fire grew and extended up the chute, Combs said.
Firefighters prevented the fire from entering the building, but the chute and trailer were destroyed before the fire could be extinguished, Combs said.
No one was injured, and the fire will not prevent the bakery from operating, Combs said.
