East Baton Rouge sheriff’s detectives are investigating an early Sunday shooting on Sarasota Drive that left one man dead and another wounded, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
Detectives found Jarvis Nelson, 22, dead inside a vehicle parked in front of his home on 4447 Sarasota Drive around 2:15 a.m., Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.
Nelson and another man were sitting in the car when the shooting happened, Hicks said.
The other man was hit and fled to a nearby house, Hicks said. Someone in that house called authorities, and the wounded man was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, she said.
Detectives are still investigating the motive for the shooting, Hicks said.
Sarasota Drive is near the intersection of North Sherwood Forest Boulevard and Greenwell Springs Road, in the northeastern part of the parish.
Tim Jackson, 29, and Sue Jackson, 30, live near Nelson’s residence. Sue Jackson said she heard about 10 gunshots after she woke up early Sunday. She said she saw a silver car parked in front of Nelson’s home where Nelson was found dead.
Tim Jackson said he saw one man run north on Sarasota minutes after the shooting and then saw another man follow behind him about 45 seconds later.
“Neither one of them looked like they were injured,” he said.
Sue Jackson said she did not know how long Nelson had been living at his Sarasota home.
“It seems like people are always coming and going,” she said.
