6,000 students apply for school vouchers

More than 6,000 students have applied for vouchers under Louisiana’s expanded program for those attending troubled public schools, officials of the state Department of Education said Friday.

The state has about 7,400 seats available, including about 5,100 new ones and about 2,300 in New Orleans, which has operated such a program since 2008. The application deadline is June 29.

The new law applies to low- and middle-income students attending C, D and F schools, as rated by the state.

If applications exceed seats available state officials will hold a lottery next month.

Families would be notified by July 31.

Thank you, LawyerDan65! I was intending to say the same. Wonder how many of those have applied for the BeauVer Christian Academy that can't pass the fire marshall's inspection and has electricity cut off to its buildings?

This is going to be a total fiasco. "General Chaos" will be in charge come the start of school this fall.

If enrolled I predict over half of these students will return or be forced to return to mainstream public schools. As it is now, charter schools have made it a habit to "expel" students they cannot teach or cannot pass in the middle of the school year and return them to their public school. The media won't report that or doesn't care to know.

But how many slots are really available, since the State has already back tracked on whether the "preliminary approvals" are subject to new unknown rules and "due diligence". Boondoggle!

Unless the courts put a halt to this government support of unregulated religious education.
