Police search for man who shot boy for stealing a cellphone
Police are searching for a man who hunted down a 13-year-old boy and shot him in the leg Wednesday morning, Police Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.
The man drove around looking for the boy after the teen reportedly stole the man’s cellphone from his car, McKneely said.
When asked if the man would be booked with a crime when found, McKneely said the matter is still under investigation.
Police do not know the man’s identity, and the only description that he is black, has a low haircut and was last seen driving a white, four-door car.
McKneely said the man’s car was parked just after 9 a.m. with one of the windows rolled down at a Shell gas station in the 7200 block of Greenwell Springs Road.
The boy reached into the car through the window and took the cellphone, McKneely said.
Someone told the man that the boy had burglarized the car, McKneely said. The man got into his car and went looking for the boy.
When the man found the boy in a nearby neighborhood, the two got into a fight, McKneely said. The man pulled the gun and shot the boy in the leg, McKneely said.
The boy ran to the 2500 block of Wooddale Boulevard, where he called police, McKneely said.
The boy’s leg wound is minor, McKneely said.
