Man arrested in shooting of pregnant wife

Authorities arrested a man Wednesday in the shooting and wounding of his pregnant wife outside a house on Bay Street on Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

Frank Atkins, 26, was captured by members of the U.S. marshal’s task force about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

U.S. Marshal Kevin Harrison said members of the task force found Atkins at an apartment complex on North Ardenwood Drive. Atkins did not resist arrest, he said.

Atkins will be booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count each of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police searched Tuesday for Atkins at 2025 Bay St., where the incident reportedly occurred.

After being shot about 12:40 p.m., the woman drove a few blocks to Choctaw Drive and Scenic Highway and called authorities, police have said. The woman was taken to a hospital.

Rosalyn Crump, 48, said Tuesday that her daughter, Kayla Atkins, 23, who is four months pregnant, was shot in the neck and is in stable condition.

Crump said her daughter had a rocky relationship with Frank Atkins, from whom Kayla Atkins was recently separated.

Kayla Atkins had reported previous incidents of domestic violence. According to court records, a temporary restraining order was issued Monday that required Frank Atkins to stay away from his wife.

Kayla Atkins said in the petition for the order that her husband tried to kill her Sunday morning and had been violent toward her on several previous occasions.

Frank Atkins was arrested Sunday and booked into Parish Prison on a count of domestic abuse battery. He was released the following day after posting bail of $7,500.

Kayla Atkins also filed a petition May 2 for a restraining order against her husband, saying he beat her, pulled a gun on her and told her he would kill her if she ever left him.

A temporary restraining order was issued that day, but it was dismissed May 3 at the request of Kayla Atkins.

According to court records, Frank Atkins also had been arrested on a count of second-degree murder, but that charge was dismissed last week.

He had been accused of killing Bernard Lands, 51, in a drug-related dispute last year.

Attention yahoos: there have been many marches and anti-violence advocacy campaigns in the "black community" these past few years. Don't blame others because you happened not to read or pay any attention to those particular news stories.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Dream has become a nightmare thanks to a small number of traitors and thugs in the Black Community. I would like to know why a woman would choose to even mate or have a relationship with a guy like this?

In the past two weeks an 8 year old black boy was beaten to death by two adults, a young pregnant black woman was shot by some tattooed freak; why is it that the only news reports I see when I get home is still about Travon? Why do all of our black leaders only care about black victims when the suspect is NOT black? Why do black people ALLOW our black leaders to do that? We all know black on black crime is far more prevalent than any other combination, yet we allow our black leaders to paint a picture of "us against them". Makes me wonder if we really want a solution. I guess it is just easier to play the victim.

Did you see in the story where Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are on their way to BR to march against all the black on black violence. (for DMJ and the rest of the liberals, that's a rhetorical question)

Nice pants. Enjoy your time in prison. You'll have all the pants down action you can handle.

My favorite part of his outfit is his shirt. "In loving memory of Ma." He just tried to kill his future baby's "ma" and future baby and he has the audacity to wear a shirt making it look like he cares about people who have passed??? But I mean, I guess showing off his crotch while wearing that shirt makes it more respectful to his "ma"

I wanted to comment on the article about Vitter moaning about the Obama Administration's strangulation of the oil and gas industry, just after awarding of the largest number of Gulf Coast drilling leases in 30 years, but comments to that article are disallowed. Instead, I find myself here, where comments, judging from the photo (can't call it a mug shot), are certain to spring up. And, look, they have, all from the usual suspects, who have all repeated, verbatim, their usual stupidity, sharing the contents of their common brain cell. Brlliantly done.

Waiting for someone to say "we need more gun control". I say we pitch in to buy him a belt. Why do they bother wearing pants?
