Infant death investigated
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Monday morning death of a 2-month-old child as a homicide, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday.
Detectives responded to a local hospital about 10:30 a.m. Monday in reference to the infant girl’s death, said Capt. Ryan Turner, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
The initial police report states that the child was unresponsive when she was brought into the hospital by her mother.
“Upon the coroner arriving on scene it was learned that the infant had several marks on both sides of her neck,” the report says.
An autopsy determined the infant’s death to be a homicide, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Arrests are expected in the near future, although Turner declined to comment about when those arrests might occur.
He also declined to disclose information about where the incident may have occurred.
“We’re not going to disclose any type of issues that the child may have had when the child was brought in,” Turner said.
The infant’s name was not released Thursday.
The initial report lists the child as being from New Iberia.
