Police arrest man, 17, in robbery, shooting

Police arrested a 17-year-old Monday in an armed robbery at an apartment complex and for firing a gun at his girlfriend’s home on La Margie Avenue, according to a warrant.

Sheldon Jason, 15578 E. Riverdale Ave., was booked into Parish Prison on one count each of attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery, and two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, according to prison records.

Jason and another unidentified man are accused of following one of the victims into his upstairs apartment at 12254 La Margie Ave., about 12:45 a.m. Monday and robbing several people inside at gunpoint, police said.

Jason also is accused of shooting a 22-year-old man in the buttocks, the police said.

The man the robbers had initially followed to the apartment tried to escape through a window, but fell to the ground and hurt his back, police said. He and the shooting victim were taken to a hospital.

Jason and his accomplice took computers, cash and car keys from the victims, and used the keys to steal one of the victims’ vehicles to flee, the warrant said.

About a block away, the robbers abandoned that vehicle and returned to the apartment to steal another car using another set of keys they took from the victims, the warrant said. Police recovered both vehicles.

Police said they believe Jason also shot at his girlfriend’s residence a block from the La Margie apartment complex about 30 minutes before the home invasion, the warrant said.

Jason also is accused in an armed robbery on April 18 in which he allegedly stole a car, wallet and cellphone from a man at Marque Ann Drive, according to another warrant.

Jason was booked on one count each of armed robbery and access device fraud for that incident, booking records show.
