Motorcyclist killed in Friday night accident
State Police are investigating a Friday night fatal crash on La. 18 in St. John the Baptist Parish after a motorcyclist sped away from sheriff’s detectives in St. James Parish and ran into a stopped vehicle in St. John, a State Police spokesman said.
A St. James Parish sheriff’s detective noticed a black 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle parked on the shoulder of the Veterans Memorial Bridge, La. 3213, around 8 p.m. and drove toward it to see if the driver needed any help, Trooper Evan Harrell said in a news release.
The motorcycle rider, Isaac Jackson Jr., 45, of Edgard, quickly drove away as the detective approached him, Harrell said. Jackson left La. 3213 and headed east on La. 18 toward St. John Parish, where the detective eventually lost him.
Jackson kept going but came upon a 2008 Chevrolet Impala stopped in the eastbound lane of La. 18, Harrell said.
Jackson hit his brakes as his motorcycle slid onto its side and hit the rear of the Impala, Harrell said.
Jackson, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected, and the motorcycle was split in half on impact, Harrell said.
The front portion of the motorcycle hit a 1994 Chevrolet truck going east, and the rear portion hit an unoccupied, parked school bus, Harrell said.
Jackson was taken to a St. James hospital, where he died, Harrell said.
The drivers of the Impala and Chevrolet — Windal Chester, 21, of Raceland; and Ira Jackson, 35, of Vacherie — were not injured, Harrell said.
Investigators discovered the motorcycle Isaac Jackson was riding was stolen and had a switched license plate, Harrell said.
Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the crash, but a sample of Isaac Jackson’s blood was sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Harrell said.
