Woman hit, killed while in roadway

A 24-year-old Jeanerette woman died Wednesday morning after a vehicle struck her while she was sitting in the right lane of U.S. 90, State Police said in a news release.

State Police said a truck driven by Michael Johnson, 52, of West Monroe, struck Moneshia Iyeumame Eligwe at 1:32 a.m. on U.S. 90 at La. 675.

Prior to the crash, Eligwe had been involved in a separate and unrelated two-vehicle crash at the same location.

After exiting her vehicle, Eligwe sat down in the right lane of the roadway, where she was struck by Johnson’s truck, State Police said.

Eligwe was pronounced dead by the Iberia Parish Coroner, State Police said.

Impairment is not suspected on the part of Johnson, but it is unknown if Eligwe was impaired, State Police said.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, State Police said.
