2012 Black History Month events

Saturday

East Baton Rouge Parish

9 A.M: The Zachary Historic Village on Virginia Street offers free admission to museum buildings, where a traveling state museum exhibit on “The Art and Social Commentary of Clementine Hunter” will be displayed. The event coincides with the Second Saturday Arts Market in downtown Zachary. African-American artists are invited to bring two or three small works of art for “show-and-tell” conversations with visitors.

10 a.m.: Port Hudson State Historic Site on U.S. 61 west of Zachary presents a tour of the Louisiana Native Guards battlefield, starting with a program at the museum. Hiking shoes are recommended for the walk.

10:30 A.M.: Baker Councilman Charles Vincent will present a program on the first black elected officials in Louisiana at the Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road, as part of his February series “Heroes in African-American History.” He also will autograph copies of his recent book, “Black Legislators in
Louisiana during Reconstruction.”

West Feliciana Parish

11 A.M.: Audubon State Historic Site on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish presents “Slavery Unbound,” focusing on the African-American experience in Louisiana during the Civil War. The role of black troops in the Battle of Jackson Crossroads will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the role of both enslaved and freed black Louisiana residents will be presented at noon and 2 p.m.

Wednesday

East Baton Rouge Parish

Noon: Blacks in Academia Perspectives Lecture Series. “Afro-Cuban Diasporas in the Atlantic World” by Solimar Otero, LSU French House-Grand Salon

6 p.m.: “Black Masculinity in America: A Sideline Story.” Hosted by the LSU Black Male Leadership Initiative and Black & Proud, LSU Peabody Hall Room 225.

Thursday

East Baton Rouge Parish

6 p.m.: Baton Rouge Community College’s second annual Gospel Festival, Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion Main Stage, 5310 Florida Blvd. Free event for students and $10 general admission.

6 P.M.: Southern University Department of History, Student Historical Society, Speech & Debate Society, and Pi Gamma Mu presents Keith Berry, professor of history and program coordinator, Hillsborough Community College, Tampa, Fla. Royal Cotillion Ballroom, Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.

Feb. 18

East Baton Rouge Parish

3 p.m.: “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow,” race relations between the Civil War and civil rights movement. Scotlandville Branch Library, 7373 Scenic Highway.

FEB. 19

East Baton Rouge Parish

6 A.M.: Jaguar University Ambassadors Campus Clean UP, University Residential Life Circle.

5 P.M.: Southern University Office of Student Affairs presents Student Affairs Lifetime Achievement Awards, honoring the Rev. Dr. Clay Evans, pastor emeritus of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago, Royal Cotillion Ballroom, Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.

FEB. 22

East Baton Rouge Parish

7:06 P.M.: Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Beta Sigma chapter presents Dr. Rani Whitfield “The Hip Hop Doc,” Royal Cotillion Ballroom, Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.

Noon: Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Alpha Sigma chapter’s 77th Founder’s Day celebration, Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union.

6 P.M.: Southern University Chancellor’s Office and Student Affairs presents Anti-Hazing Workshop featuring Dr. Ricky Jones and a host of past and present National Greek Officers, Royal Cotillion Ballroom, Smith-Brown Memorial Union.
