EBR Housing Authority gets $1.4 million grant

The East Baton Rouge Housing Authority was awarded $1.4 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, part of a $1.8 billion disbursement to public housing authorities in all 50 states.

The grants, announced Friday by HUD, gave housing authorities throughout Louisiana a total of $43.5 million “to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize the public housing in their communities.”

“This funding can be used to make large-scale improvements such as new roofs and to make energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems,” HUD said in a news release.

The Baton Rouge housing authority could not be reached for comment Friday on whether its funding is tied to any specific projects yet.

The money comes from HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which provides annual funding to all public housing authorities.

New Orleans got the largest allotment in the state, at $20.6 million, while Monroe got $2.2 million. There were 102 housing authorities in Louisiana receiving money, either in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. Denham Springs got $51,500.
