DA: Fenroy charges unlikely

LAFAYETTE - A former University of Louisiana at Lafayette football standout who works for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office likely will not face criminal charges for a first-offense domestic abuse violation, District Attorney Mike Harson said Friday.

Lafayette police arrested Tyrell Fenroy in October on misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse battery and improper telephone communications following a complaint by Fenroy's former girlfriend.

The Sheriff's Office placed Fenroy on administrative leave Oct. 19 and allowed him to return to work Oct. 31, said Capt. Kip Judice, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

"The finding of the case was that he violated LPSO Code of Conduct Policy and received appropriate discipline for that violation," Judice said in an e-mail Friday.

The Sheriff's Office declined to offer additional comments as it "could hamper the impending criminal litigation," Judice wrote.

An arrest affidavit says the victim told officers that Fenroy had abused her during a fight. The victim initially said she did not want to pursue charges as long as Fenroy did not contact her again, the affidavit says.

The victim called police the following day to report that Fenroy had called her several times, left text messages on her phone and had parked his truck next to her vehicle outside of her place of employment, the affidavit says.

Police arrested Fenroy in the parking lot, the affidavit says.

Harson said he will propose that Fenroy go through the district's domestic abuse program, "which is fairly common for first-time offenders."

The victim in the case has not returned calls to his office, Harson said. Prosecuting the case would be difficult without the victim's cooperation, the prosecutor said.

"We'd like to know whether she's going to cooperate," Harson said.

The district's domestic abuse program lasts seven to eight months and involves about 30 classes, Harson said.

Fenroy was hired on June 8, 2010, as a correctional deputy, Judice said.

Fenroy played for ULL from 2005 to 2008. The university retired his jersey No. 32 in 2008 after he became the school's all-time leading rusher.
