Another arrest in Loupe shooting

Police arrested a second teenager Wednesday they say was involved in a shooting that severely injured Metro Councilman Chandler Loupe’s 15-year-old son.

The teens had planned to rob Loupe’s son and his two friends at gunpoint as the trio tried to buy marijuana in the Mayfair-area subdivision Friday, according to court documents.

Police booked Terrance Thornton, 18, 9536 Avis Ave., into Parish Prison on three counts of armed robbery, one count of accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder and one count of possession of marijuana, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy Tuesday and booked him into the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center on one count of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of attempted armed robbery, police have said. None of the juveniles’ names were released.

Chandler Loupe did not attend the Wednesday night Metro Council meeting, which opened with an invocation led by Councilman Ulysses “Bones” Addison, who asked for prayers for his colleague’s son.

Loupe’s son was shot in the chest just before 6 p.m. Friday after he, another 15-year-old and a 17-year-old went to buy marijuana in the 1600 block of Mary Lou Drive, police have said.

Thornton was “the person who set up the deal,” having spoken to one of the victims by cellphone and giving them driving directions, according to the affidavit.

Once the victims’ car arrived in the area, Thornton told them “to drive around the corner,” according to the affidavit.

Once the car turned down the street, Thornton and the 16-year-old “jumped” into the victims’ car’s back seat, the affidavit says. The 16-year-old allegedly held up a gun, demanding the victims’ money. Loupe’s two friends escaped from the car and ran away, leaving Loupe trapped in the back seat surrounded by the two robbers, the affidavit says.

Once Loupe handed over some cash, the 16-year-old fired at least two shots inside the car, one striking Loupe in the upper chest, the other shattering the car window, according to the affidavit.

While recovering in a local hospital, Loupe identified Thornton from a photo lineup, according to the affidavit.

Loupe’s 17-year-old friend called police at 6 p.m. from the 1800 block of Staring Lane and said that someone had been shot, police records show. The teen said that he was driving in the Mayfair neighborhood when someone shot at his vehicle, according to the records.

Police questioned and released the 17-year-old on Friday, McKneely said. The 15-year-old, who was not injured in the incident, was arrested Friday and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Detention Center on a count of attempted possession of marijuana.

When police approached Thornton’s car to arrest him Wednesday, they smelled marijuana and saw a “marijuana ‘blunt’ in plain sight,” according to the affidavit.

Thornton’s bond was set at $227,000, according to the East Baton Roue Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Thornton was previously arrested in August 2011 for possession of marijuana, possession of Schedule II drugs, possession of a stolen firearm and illegal carrying of weapon with drugs.
