Pilot Club vies to win $25,000

Voting ends Tuesday for January’s Aprons in Action, The Home Depot Foundation’s Facebook voting program.

This month, The Pilot Club is one of four nonprofit organizations that has been selected as a finalist for the program, giving it a chance to win a $25,000 gift card from Home Depot.

The organization with the most votes will win the $25,000 prize and be in the running for the grand prize of $250,000 in March. The runner-up organizations for each month will receive $5,000 in Home Depot gift cards.

“Being selected for the Aprons in Action Program is an honor, and we are so thankful for the recognition,” said Terri Borde, treasurer of the Pilot Club of Denham Springs Foundation. “If we actually win the $25,000 Home Depot gift card, we will be able to add more playground equipment and garbage receptacles at Kidz Korner Playland.”

The Pilot Club of Denham Springs Foundation founded Kidz Korner Playland to provide a play area for children of all abilities.

The Pilot Club of Denham Springs Foundation and Team Depot volunteers have already constructed the playland and installed a safety fence around the facility.

“Aprons in Action is our $1 million effort to support the most active and engaged nonprofit organizations across the country,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. “Over the course of this program, we’ll distribute $1 million to 48 deserving organizations from across the nationwide Team Depot network, allowing them to continue their great work serving our communities.”

Christian athletes

Josh Martin, a teacher and coach at Denham Springs Freshman High, was named the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle Coach of the Year recently at the FCA Banquet in Ponchatoula.

The Huddle Coach of the Year is awarded to the faculty adviser whose example and commitment made the greatest impact on student-athletes who belong to campus organizations known as FCA Huddles, organizers said.

The event’s keynote speaker was former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Torrance Small. Saints kicker Garrett Hartley also attended.

Before an audience of more than 400 students, athletes, and coaches, Martin was taken by surprise, organizers said.

In his third year as the FCA Huddle Coach at Denham Spring Freshman High School, Martin works closely with the student leaders who guide a huddle of more than 200 members.

“As a teacher and athletic coach, I’m already involved in their lives, and through FCA we can have a spiritual impact as well,” Martin said.
