SATURDAY

East Baton Rouge Parish

11 a.m.: Heroes of African American History Series, Baker Branch Library, 3501 Groom Road. Charles Vincent is a professor of history at Southern University and president of The Mwalimu Institute who represents District 1 on the Baker City Council. Iberville Parish

10:30 a.m.: March down Landry Street in Maringouin and past Bayou Maringouin celebrating the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Followed by church program, “A Salute to Dr. King,” at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Center. State 1st Circuit Court of Appeal Judge John Guidry will serve as guest speaker.

East Baton Rouge Parish

1 p.m.: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade beginning at William and Lee Park, Louisiana Avenue, Port Allen, with West Baton Rouge Parish Mass Choir as sponsor. Float participants will begin lining up at 11 a.m.

SUNDAY

East Baton Rouge Parish

10 a.m.: “Day Without Violence.” Martin Luther King Jr. Day march will begin at Scotlandville High School and include special guests, The Nubian Kruzers United Bikers from Baton Rouge, riding from Scotlandville High School to Southern University. Following the march at noon, the Battle of the Bands will feature 11 high school bands and special guest. The Human Jukeb Box also will perform. Followed by the 2nd aAnnual Football Classic, Louisiana vs. The World at 2:30 p.m. at Southern University. Sponsored by Cox Communications, “Who’s The Mann” Sports Network and Metro Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle.

MONDAY, Jan. 16

Ascension Parish

4 to 6 p.m.: The River Road African American Museum will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration under the theme “A Quest for Peace and Justice” at the museum, 406 Charles St. The event will feature the Donaldsonville High School African American History Class, The River Road African American Museum Sign Language Ensemble, area ministers and a viewing of the Washington, D.C., Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial “Build the Dream” virtual tour on the outdoor big screen.

East Baton Rouge Parish

7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Day of service. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Baton Rouge Alumnae Chapter will hold a clean-up and beautification project at Glen Oaks Park Elementary, Glen Oaks High and Forest Heights Academy of Excellence schools in the Glen Oaks and Zion City subdivisions in north Baton Rouge. 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Day of service. The Louisiana Delta Service Corps (a local AmeriCorps program) will partner with the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance to paint the inside and outside of Mid City’s office building as well as organize the warehouse. Working with volunteers from Forum 35, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and other sororities and fraternities. Lunch will be provided and children are welcome. 8 a.m.: Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2012 Commemoration Program, Mount Zion First Baptist Church, 356 East Blvd. Speaker for the program is Bishop Raymond, founder and pastor of Living Faith Christian Center. The program also includes representatives from Baton Rouge’s varied faith community, civic and community entities and governmental leaders. Mayor-President Kip Holden, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, East Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent John Dilworth, Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White and Metro Council members have been invited to attend. The program will culminate with a march for peace from the church to the Baton Rouge River Center. Followed by voter registration drive.

8 a.m.: Day of Service, Baker Municipal Center Auditorium, 3325 Groom Road, Baker. N.U.B.B. Community Walk and Breakfast followed by Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Commemorative Service at 10 a.m. Speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Melvin B. Girton Sr., senior pastor, Christ Missionary Baptist Church, Indianapolis.

8:30 a.m.: Day of service and program, Belaire High School, 12121 Tams Drive and La Belle Aire Elementary, 12225 Tams Drive. Registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Painting inspirational murals to create stimulating, learning environments for students and beautifying school gardens and the surrounding areas. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Day of service. More than 160 LSU students, along with community partners and residents, will volunteer at several sites in historic Old South Baton Rouge to facilitate a home rehabilitation and provide site improvements for one church and two community gardens. Partners include the LSU Office of Multicultural Affairs; the LSU Community University Partnership,; the Center for Planning Excellence; the Working Interfaith Network; and Shell Chemicals of Geismar.

Followed by Documentary of 1953 Baton Rouge Bus Boycott, with facilitator Johnnie Jones, Sr., counsel for the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott plaintiffs and presenter, Veronica Freeman, professor of history, Southern University.

2 p.m.: “Operation Golden Shield” Fire Safety and Prevention Presentation and Public Benefits Sign-Up For Senior Citizens, Greater First Church-Baptist-Sanctuary, 4669 Groom Road, Baker., LA. Facilitators: Donald Carter, Chief, Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal and Howard Ward, Public Relations Officer with the Baker Fire Department. The Rev. Anthony Kelley, senior pastor and teacher, Greater First Church Baptist, is chair; The Honorable Harold M. Rideau, mMayor, City of Baker, is honorary co-chairman.

5:30 to 7 p.m.: Candlelight gathering for faculty, staff, students, and community members at the LSU Memorial Clock Tower. After a welcome statement and a purpose statement, candles are lit and the walk begins as all sing hymns such as “We Shall Overcome” and “This Little Light of Mine.” After the march, participants return to the LSU Student Union for a reception and entertainment.

5:30 p.m.: Candlelight march, Southern University. Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Beta Sigma Chapter at Southern will lead a candlelight march and gathering to celebrate King’s birthday. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Mayberry Lawn between the Mayberry Dining Hall and the J.S. Clark Administration Building.

6 p.m.: The Zachary Martin Luther King Jr. Committee will hold a candlelight march from the Zachary City Hall to New Pilgrim Baptist Church, 4415 Old Weis Road. This year’s theme is “What Are You Doing Today to Honor His Legacy.” A program at the church will feature a community choir and a talk by Gaynell Young, the longest-serving member of the Zachary Community School Board.

Iberville Parish

10 a.m.: The Iberville Parish Ministers’ Conference will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Program at the Plymouth Rock Baptist Church, 58830 Iron Farm Road, Plaquemine. The Davis-Williams Award will be presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to our community.

Livingston Parish

9 a.m.: Club OutReach will sponsor their annual Martin Luther King Program at the Club OutReach Center 30277 Sunset St., Walker. The march will begin at 9 a.m. and the program at 10 a.m. The guest speaker will be attorney Raymond Simmons. Chris Hawkins, Walker High and LSU graduate, currently playing with the Tennessee Titans, will be honored. 10:45 a.m.: Program begins at Roberts United Methodist Church 201 Julia St. Denham Springs. Mr. Edgar Poree’, retired BellSouth executive, is the keynote speaker.

Pointe Coupee Parish

9:30 a.m.: The New Roads NAACP chapter will have a march starting at St. Augustine Church and ending at the Pointe Coupee Parish Courthouse. A program will follow the march at 10 a.m. at the courthouse.

Iberville Parish

TUESDAY, Jan. 24

East Baton Rouge Parish

6 p.m.: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, Baton Rouge Community College Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion. The theme for the occasion is “The life, the legacy, the vision.” The keynote speaker for this event is Harold Eugene Ford Jr. Ford was a Democratic Party member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee’s 9th congressional district, centered in Memphis from 1997 to 2007.

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25

East Baton Rouge Parish

6 p.m.: Martin Luther King & Black History Month Commemorative Celebration, Manship Theatre. The Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and the Black History Month Committee will host author, poet, essayist, and professor Nikki Giovanni for the keynote performance at the MLK Commemorative Celebration. A question and answer session will follow her speech.

THURSDAY, Jan. 26

East Baton Rouge Parish

6 p.m.: MLK Performing Arts Night, Cotillion Ballroom, LSU Student Union. This event allows students to re-establish King’s belief, achievements, and life goals through various art forms. During the course of the evening, members of the LSU and Baton Rouge community showcase their singing, dancing, and lyrical talents. Participants are encouraged to bring works that celebrate and display the importance of the life, works, and legacy of King.
