Man accused of killing brother

A 53-year-old Texas man is accused of shooting and killing his older brother Thursday night during a domestic disturbance inside the brother’s home in Bendel Gardens, Lafayette police said Friday.

Cpl. Paul Mouton, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department, said Danny Granstaff, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, shot and killed Michael Granstaff, 61, about 6:30 p.m. Thursday inside Michael Granstaff’s home at 100 Bernice Ave.

Danny Granstaff fired multiple shots, striking his brother several times, before he fired a final shot into his own leg, Mouton said.

Investigators have not determined whether Granstaff wounded himself intentionally or by accident, Mouton said.

Detectives also are still trying to sort out exactly what led to the confrontation between the two brothers, Mouton said.

No one else was inside the home during the shooting, Mouton said.

“Investigators are still talking with family members to discover the purpose and nature of the visit,” Mouton said.

An armed Lafayette police officer is standing guard with Danny Granstaff at an undisclosed local hospital, where Granstaff is listed in stable condition, Mouton said.

A guard “is going to sit with him until he is able to be booked on second-degree murder,” Mouton said.

A warrant for Granstaff’s arrest has already been issued, Mouton said.

This is the city’s first homicide of 2012 and the first homicide in recent memory in the Bendel Gardens area, Mouton said.
