Sasol secures final permits for Lake Charles mega-project

Sasol has obtained the final two federal permits needed to build the $21 billion natural gas-to-liquids plant and ethane cracker in Westlake.

The facility is expected to create 1,200 direct jobs and 5,800 indirectly.

The gas-to-liquids facility will be capable of making more than 4 million gallons of diesel and other liquid fuels a day. The cracker plant will convert ethane, a component of natural gas, into ethylene, a base chemical of plastics, resins, adhesives and a variety of synthetic products

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., praised the U.S. Army corps of Engineers’ decision to approve the final permits, and the South African energy-and-chemical giant’s investment in the state.
