BR I-10 bridge lane closures planned

Nighttime lane closures are planned for the next 18 months on the heavily traveled Interstate 10 Mississippi River Bridge, officials said Wednesday.

The work is needed for rust removal and painting, Indira Parrales, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation and Development, said in an email response to questions.

Details of the plan are supposed to be spelled out next week.

However, the project is set to start in mid-September.

The lane closures may last from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

State officials usually avoid work during the heaviest traffic periods, such as on weekends when LSU is hosting a football game.

About 102,000 motorists use the bridge daily, a rise of 16 percent since 2010.
