Lafayette toddler left unattended wanders on to busy street

The roommate of a child’s caregiver was arrested on Tuesday, accused of negligent actions that left a 2-year-old free to walk out of the house and on to traffic-heavy Foreman Drive, officials said.

Jenika Brooks of Lafayette faces one count of child desertion for allegedly leaving for work without making sure her roommate, the child’s caretaker, was awake to watch over the child, Lafayette Police Cpl. Nicole Benoit said.

Brooks was home at the residence in the 300 block of Sunny Lane when the girl’s father dropped off his daughter earlier on Tuesday morning, Benoit said.

“The child was able to open the door, leave the residence and travel to the 400 block of Foreman Drive,” Benoit said.

The girl was unharmed and returned to her father, she said.
