Daniel Chustz, of Rougon, had come to a stop where La. 981 meets the narrow highway near an Exxon gas station when he tried to turn onto the road, Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer said in a release. But as he turned, his SUV was in the way of Ryland Houston, 30, who tried to veer out of the way to avoid hitting him, Sandifer said. But Houston’s Dodge Ram slammed into the SUV, which veered off the roadway and into a ditch, he said. Chustz was taken to Pointe Coupee General Hospital in New Roads, where he died of his injuries soon after. Houston suffered minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and neither driver is suspected of being intoxicated.
