EVERYBODY READS, Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) — Tony Pryer (225) 226-4703 or everybodyreads@ebrschools.org: VIPS is seeking volunteers. Each year, over 1,600 Pre-K-2nd-grade students, who could benefit from one-on-one tutoring with a caring adult, are recommended by their teachers to participate in Everybody Reads. Reading Friend volunteers are recruited, screened, and trained by VIPS, and is asked to meet for 30-45 minutes with the student on a consistent basis during the school year.

HELPING THE HOMELESS, Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless — Dillon Hall, (225) 388-5855 or dhall@homelessinbr.org: Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless is looking for volunteers to assist with the center’s work with the area homeless. Volunteer opportunities are available seven days a week with the following times: Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m. Contact Hall for more information.

YOUTH TUTORING PROGAM, Gardere Initiative — Adam (225) 803-9616 or gardereintiative@gmail.com. This fall, the Gardere Initative is seeking to grow its youth tutoring program specifically to cater toward some of the issues that will be coming with the Common Core educational developments.

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY, Together Baton Rouge and The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank Mobile Food Pantries Together Baton Rouge in conjunction with the GBR Food Bank is in need of volunteers to help with the Mobile Pantries. Contact Rogers.

MATH FRIENDS, Volunteers in Public School (VIPS) — Kimberly Marcelle (225) 226-4700: More than 200 children in East Baton Rouge Parish are struggling with basic math concepts but do not have a VIPS Math Friend. Math Friend volunteers meet with a first-, second- or third-grader for 30-45 minutes weekly using instructive tools from the VIPS Math Bin to help improve a child’s math skills.
