Iota Master Chapter holds ice cream social

Iota Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held summer social Aug. 9 at Dearman’s Soda Shop. Cheryl Foster and Nancy McGraw were event hosts, and 18 members and guests attended.

Essie Mongeau received a patriotic quilt from her secret sister. Members caught up on the summer activities. Iota Master will hold Beginning Day on Aug. 28 at President Pat Buturla’s home.

LSU student receives Pi Beta Phi award

LSU student Shelby Pursley, of Winter Park, Florida, has received the Amy Burnham Onken Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Campus and Community Leadership from Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women.

The annual award honors a Pi Phi senior who has best exhibited excellent scholarship, outstanding campus participation and community service during career.

Pursley held leadership roles for the LSU College of Engineering College Council, the Biological Engineering Student Organization and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. She maintained a 3.9 GPA as a biological engineering major, worked as a research assistant for two LSU professors, wrote various publications and presented at several academic conferences. She has received awards, scholarships and research grants for her academic achievements.

Haygood promoted to National Guard colonel

Cindy H. Haygood has been promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard. Haygood serves as group commander with 139th Regional Support Group, Jackson Barracks, in New Orleans. She has served in the military for 26 years.

Haygood is the daughter of Brenda Martin, of Leesville, and Charles W. Hayes, of Portland, Texas, sister of Bernice Taylor, of Baton Rouge, and daughter-in-law of Jackie Durham, of Gonzales.

She is a 1985 graduate of Leesville High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1991 from LSU.

Lancon promoted to ANG staff sergeant

James S. Lancon has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard. Lancon serves as intelligence sergeant with 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, Lake Charles Readiness Center. He has served in the military for six years.

Lancon is the grandson of Wanda Smith, of McComb, Mississippi, and is a 2009 graduate of Central High School.

Sims graduates from Air Force basic training

Air Force Airman 1st Class Raven B. Sims graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Sims is the daughter of Tapestry L. Smith, of Prairieville, granddaughter of Brenda Sims, of Baton Rouge, and is a 2011 graduate of Dutchtown High School.

Amite High Class of ’95 sets Sept. 26-27 event
