Southeastern adds DT Combs

Junior defensive tackle Marquel Combs has transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University, Southeastern football coach Ron Roberts announced Monday.

Combs has been ruled eligible to participate immediately by the NCAA. Rated the No. 3 junior college defensive lineman in the country by ESPN, the 6-3, 295-pound Memphis native signed with Kansas out of Los Angeles Pierce College, but did not see action with the Jayhawks before transferring to Southeastern.

Roberts expects the four-star Rivals recruit to have an immediate impact for the Lions.

“We are very excited to have someone of Marquel’s talents become a Lion,” Roberts said. “In addition to his athletic abilities, he’s a high-character young man who is going to be an asset to our program on and off the field.”

As a sophomore at Pierce, Combs posted 19 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Combs played at Hamilton High School in Memphis, where he was an All-Metro selection as a senior.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, hosting Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. Hall of Fame inductees Felton Huggins, Nate Lofton and Chris Carter will be honored at halftime.
