Girl Scouts to make robots through First Lego League

The Girl Scouts First LEGO League kick-off and informational meeting, scheduled from 6 p.m .to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Girl Scouts Regional Service Center, 545 Colonial Drive in Baton Rouge, is for girls, ages 9-14, who are interested in designing, building and programming a robot.

Participation in the First Lego League introduces girls to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. The team of about 10 girls is coached and mentored by members of the Society of Women Engineers.

“We meet weekly at the Girl Scout regional office during tournament season which runs from late August to early December to prepare for the regional qualification in November,” said Diane Doise, with the Society of Women Engineers. This year’s tournament will be Dec. 8 in New Orleans.

Any interested girl (non-Girl Scouts welcome) and her guardian may attend the kick off or email Doise at [e-mail].

Once a girl has determined she wants to participate, an application and $25 per participant will need to be submitted to the Girl Scouts Louisiana East council, attention Kevin Shipp.

Series look at Constitution

The Louisiana Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates will present the James Otis Lecture Series from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 in the Main Courtroom on the 11th floor of the 19th Judicial District Courthouse in downtown Baton Rouge.

The board created the James Otis Lecture Series to educate and inspire students across our nation so they will have appropriate knowledge of and respect for the United States Constitution.

The Louisiana Chapter’s program will include U.S. District Judge James J. Brady, of the Middle District of Louisiana; LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center Chancellor Jack M. Weiss and Professor Winston W. Riddick, of the Southern University Law Center, as guest speakers.

Private and public high schools in and around East Baton Rouge Parish were invited to participate by nominating two students, along with a teacher from each school to attend.

Chorus auditions on Aug. 25

The Greater Baton Rouge Children’s Chorus will hold auditions for the 2012-2013 season on Aug. 25 at First Baptist Church, 529 Convention St.

Auditions are by appointment only and open to children in grades four through 12.

There is no charge to audition, nor is previous experience required, and scholarships are available for qualified children

The chorus has been offering choral education since 1997 and is known for its highly eclectic and artistic repertoire as well as its collaboration with local performing artists and composers. Jennifer Ellis, voice teacher, certified music educator, and performer, directs the chorus.

The chorus presents two concerts during the season, collaborates with other arts organizations and performs at community functions. The chorus has performed with Baton Rouge Symphony, Baton Rouge Ballet Theater, Baton Rouge Little Theater, and Louisiana Sinfonietta.
