Area girls win title, parade places

A girl from Sunshine, near St. Gabriel in Iberville Parish, is the International Cinderella Scholarship Pageant Miniature Miss for 2012-2013.

Shelby Bordelon competed in July in Las Vegas, prevailing against 65 girls from around the world in a division for girls who were ages 7 through 9 during their qualifying pageants.

The competition included interview, sportswear modeling, party dress modeling and talent, for which she performed a musical theater dance to “I’m Getting Good at Being Bad” from “102 Dalmatians,” explained Louisiana State Director Joey Milazzo in an email.

“I am a proud state director as Louisiana has not had an international winner in eight years,” Milazzo said.

Shelby, now 10, is a fifth-grader at St. Jude the Apostle School and also attends the Center Stage Performing Arts Academy. Her parents are Brian and Reneé Bordelon.

Cheer for Houston parade

Four eighth-graders from North Corbin Junior High in Walker have been selected to join more than 300 elementary, junior high and high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the country to perform in one of the oldest Thanksgiving Day parades in the country, the 63rd H-E-B Holiday Parade on Thanksgiving Day in Houston.

The Walker students are Kayla Covington, 13, the daughter of Cynthia Hohensee and Greg Covington; Hannah Israel, 13, the daughter of Tammy Coulon and Arthur Israel; Taylor Lockhart, 12, the daughter of Veva and Derk Lockhart, and Lexi Schroeder, 13, the daughter of Ashlyn and Jason Schroeder.

The cheerleading and dance All-Americans selections were made at Varsity’s summer camps throughout the country, including Universal Cheerleaders Association, Universal Dance Association, National Cheerleaders Association, National Dance Alliance and American Cheerleaders Association.

The Varsity All-American program is celebrating its 26th year of choosing camp standouts.

New class begins ag study

Twelve students have begun the LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Young Ag Producers Program, while eight others have completed their yearlong journey.

The program is a one-year, intensive classroom and hands-on, mentor-based experience that introduces high school juniors and seniors to the options available to them in the areas of food and fiber production. It is designed to encourage participants to consider the possibilities of careers in agricultural industries.

Participants attend two summer institutes on the LSU campus and complete 50 internship hours with a qualified mentor during the school term.

Members of the 2012-2013 LaYAPP class are Zack Billings, of Bogalusa; Cody Effler, of Ponchatoula; Thomas Forbes Jr., of Morganza; Cole Frey, of Morganza; Lucas Glaser, of Torbert; Seth Guillory, of Kaplan; George LaCour III, of New Roads; Andre’ Lanie, of Youngsville; Jamal Livingston, of Lafayette; Mason Matirne, of St. James; Brandon Parrie, of Noble; Melissa Pierce, of Kinder; and Emily Schenk, of Walker.

Members of the 2011-2012 class were Marcus Pousson, of Welsh; Joshua Wicke, of Lake Charles; Sarah McKinney, of Ponchatoula; Justin Matherne, of Thibodaux; Ben Miguez, of Lacassine; Matthew Pierce, of Kinder; Sam Laroux, of Zwolle; and Blair Bennett, of Spearsville.
