MY LIFE seeks young adults to help make a difference

Magellan Health Services is looking for teens and young adults who have experience with mental health care, substance abuse, foster care and/or juvenile justice issues and who want to make a difference for others with similar experiences.

Magellan Youth Leaders Inspiring Future Empowerment (MY LIFE) is an organization for ages 13 to 23 that seeks to bring young voices into the discussions of how to best provide care.

During Baton Rouge Youth Rise, a gathering scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Catholic Life Center, 1800 S. Acadian Thruway, participants will discuss the potential for forming a MY LIFE group. The meeting will include dinner and prizes.

MY LIFE groups work through regular meetings, special events and hip-hop performances.

Girls learn about safe dating

Faith House is presenting a new summer program, “Love Is…,” to educate girls ages 12 to 17 on the healthy aspects of dating and the warning signs of dating violence.

The program will follow a curriculum called “Safe Dates.”

The sessions are free and include lunch. Travel assistance will be provided to those who qualify. Call [phone] to register for a session.

• Acadia Parish — 9 a.m. to noon July 9, 16, 23 and 30 at Gatti’s Pizza in Crowley. Register by 4:30 p.m. July 2.
• Vermilion Parish — 9 a.m. to noon July 10, 17, 24 and 31 at the Abbeville Library. Register by 4:30 p.m. July 3.
• St. Landry Parish — 9 a.m. to noon July 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1 at the public library in Opelousas. Register by 4:30 p.m. July 4.
• Evangeline Parish — 9 a.m. to noon July 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the Civic Center in Ville Platte. Register by 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
• Lafayette Parish — 9 a.m. to noon July 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the Lafayette South Regional Library and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 6, 12, 20 and 27 at the Clifton Chenier Center in North Lafayette. Register by 4:30 p.m. June 29.

BR Ballet offers workshop

Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre is offering dancers ages 10 and older a summer intensive workshop under the direction of guest instructor John Magnus and other artists beginning Monday and continuing through June 29.

John Magnus, artistic director of Portland Festival Ballet, taught at New York’s Joffrey Ballet School for more than 20 years and was appointed artistic director in 2005. He will teach ballet and advanced pointe.

Dancers’ Workshop faculty member and Runnels School dance teacher Mary Camille Maddox will instruct acro dance classes. Texas Ballet Theater company trainee and former BRBT dancer Meredith Broussard will teach gyrokinesis. And BRBT principal dancer and LSU Golden Girl Natalie Knight will instruct jazz classes.

Tuition is $350. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with drop off beginning at 8 a.m. at Dancers’ Workshop, 10745 Linkwood Court. Call Nicole Naquin or Leigh Phillips at [phone] or email [e-mail] or [e-mail].

Girls get fitted for free bras

Jess’ Bra Closet, a nonprofit foundation which provides quality undergarments for women and young girls, will be giving away bras during a back-to-school fair on July 21.

Girls who want a free bra should attend a fitting from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Leo Butler Community Center, 950 E. Washington St., or register by contacting the organization with their bra size. Call [phone] or email [e-mail].

Girl Scouts achieve silver

Seven Girl Scout Cadettes from Baton Rouge recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a registered Girl Scout Cadette in grades 6 to 9 can achieve.

Earning the Girl Scout Silver Award exemplifies a Girl Scout’s commitment to helping others and “taking action” in her community. It requires the completion of a series of leadership challenges as well as a take-action project with a minimum 50 hours of work, including planning and implementation.

The Silver Award winners — Marika Buchholz, Rio Gauthier, Griffin Gowdy, Catherine Haller, Sadie Kraft, Kara Peneguy and Katie Pousson, all of Baton Rouge Girl Scout Cadette Troop 10360 — hung hand-sewn valances in the rooms of the Bishop Ott Sweet Dreams shelter, a shelter for homeless women and their children. Afterward, the troop gave treats to the women and played with the children at the shelter. Project adviser was Janice Moss.
