Area students get scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced that several Baton Rouge and Lafayette area students have won National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.

Recent recipients include: Morgan L. DeCuir, St. Joseph’s Academy, TCU Scholarship; Makaley F. Heughan, Baton Rouge Magnet High School, University of Alabama Scholarship; Madison E. McMurray, Episcopal High School, Vanderbilt University Scholarship; Megan N. Olsen, St. Michael The Archangel, University of Alabama Scholarship; William H. Patrick IV, Episcopal High, Emory University Scholarship; Thomas Braxton Ray, Baton Rouge Magnet, Baylor University Scholarship; Adelaide E. Ritter, Episcopal High, University of Central Florida Scholarship; Meghan Kreller St. Cyr, Baton Rouge Magnet, Baylor University Scholarship; and Leah C. Wyatt, St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette, University of Southern California Scholarship.

Runnels names art winners

The Runnels Spring Art Show featured more than 2,000 pieces of artwork created by students in all four divisions of the school. Artwork that won Judges’ Choice awards in grades 7-12 will be on display in the foyer of the Runnels Theater on the school’s Harrell’s Ferry Road campus for one year.

Three Judges’ Choice awards were given in each category. The student winners, by category, included:

• Junior High 2-D — Julia Power, Jasmine Felton and Abby Rayner.
• Junior High 3-D — Emme McElveen, Robert Law and Heath Moser.
• High School, 2-D — Celeste Runnels, Sarah Garrett and Beau Sanders.
• High School, 3-D — Maddy Inzenga, Hannah Disheroon and Kendall Mulina.
• High School, Photography — Jake Johnson, Emilie Enochsson and Majdal Ismail.
• High School, Architecture — Daniel Parker, Caleb Curry and Caleb Manning.
• Advanced Placement (AP) Art — Savanna LaBauve, Maegan Daquano and Nicolas Blunck.

Group promotes teen safety

The local nonprofit organization, Aspirations, will present its sixth annual “Teen Violence Prevention and Self-Esteem Building Conference” from noon to 4 p.m. June 16 at Aspirations’ home-based headquarters, 3966 Lanier Drive.

The guest speaker will be WAFB-TV news reporter Greg Meriweather. Food and refreshments will be served, and there will be educational presentations and material.

The “Magic Johnson” HIV mobile testing unit of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., will also be there, according to Aspirations founder Joyce Turner Keller.

Four get citizenship medals

The Iberville Parish Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Good Citizenship medals to four St. John High School students: Tyler St. Germain, Kyle Glynn, Randi Seneca and Denny Vong.

Vong also received a cash reward.

Nathan Voisin was a runner-up for the Good Citizen Award.

To receive these honors the young people had to demonstrate qualities of high moral character and actively seek to help the community.
