Remember it for a tasty slow-cooked stew. It’s prime stew or soup weather and there’s nothing better on a cold winter’s day or while in the throes of a cold or flu. Through the years, a freezer meal has come in handy on more than one occasion. Perhaps sharing with a neighbor, helping a friend recover from illness or surgery or just because we liked it, the soup or stew’s origin was typically one leftover or another — a hambone here or a turkey carcass there. They tend to make the most delicious meals, at least in my humble opinion. Add vegetables, seasonings and broth, throw in the slow cooker, and the simmering flavors can whet just about any appetite. So enjoy your turkey or ham in another recipe this new year. If you’ve resolved to try and cut down on grocery expenses, dishes like this one are also great budget stretchers.
