Tree top views in St. Francisville

The woods are heavy along La. Highway 10 just east of St. Francisville, and there’s a tall West Indies plantation style home with tree top views of six acres of natural forest. The entry to the home at 13373 La. Highway 10 is 15 steps up, but a private elevator takes all the work out of getting there. And once you’re up there, the views are fantastic all over the house.

The metal-roofed home was built nine years ago, and the builder used lots of reclaimed wood during construction. Narrow oak planks floor much of the home’s second level, which houses the master suite, the living room, the kitchen and an interior loggia that stretches from front to back. Most of the doors are antique cypress, and there are lots of beaded board surfaces as well.

Three bedrooms and a full bath, a big media room and a crafts area are downstairs. To move between floors, you can take the custom staircase or the private elevator. The elevator opens next to the stairway on the second level and near the home’s two-car garage on the ground floor.

When you take the wide front entry steps, you’ll then cross a wide wood porch and enter the home’s foyer, which is near the top of the interior stairs and the elevator.

To the right is the formal dining room, which connects to a long interior loggia that heads past the kitchen and breakfast room to the living room in the back of the home.

Off the living room is the wide second floor porch, which affords views of woods and wildlife, as well as the ravines that run along two sides of the property. Wide steps lead down to the ground from the tall porch. “In the fall, it’s magical out here,” the owner said.

The kitchen and breakfast areas are about halfway down the loggia, and the kitchen has cased openings to the living room and breakfast room. Kitchen counter tops are 3 cm granite slabs, and the painted cabinetry has beaded board panels for a fresh country look. Italian ceramic tile floors the kitchen. The appliance package is stainless, including two ovens, but stealing the show are a pair of old New Orleans cypress doors on dual pantries, as well as a counter top made from 100-year-old cypress planks.

The master suite, meanwhile, has a wonderful sitting room that can be closed off via old, heavy pocket doors. This room has two walls of windows, providing possibly the best views of all.

The master bath is through an antique cypress door and features a long whirlpool tub, a walk-in shower and dual vanities. The master closet is lined with cedar planks.

The home office is in front, not far from the stairs and elevator. Down below, there’s a big media room with an exit to another wide porch, this one screened to keep bugs at bay. Outside, there’s a wide wood deck.

There are three large bedrooms on the first level as well as a full bath, a crafts area and the laundry room.

The home also has energy efficient windows, a security system and a whole house generator if the power goes out. It’s a charming country home in the treetops of historic St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish.
